The source identification data (Finger Print) is injected into the active picture area of a video signal without disturbing the viewing of the video signal and the data is retrieved by a data reader, called a Fingerprint Reader. The data injection or 'fingerprinting' process consists of dynamically offsetting the video pedestal to carry information which can then be read back from any videotape made from the output of the data-injecting unit. In particular, the fingerprint carries the ID number of the unit used and the current date. The offset lasts for one entire field and has an amplitude of approxmately 0.5 IRE that is, a given field either has the nominal setup or a setup value differing from nominal by 0.5 IRE. The data is repeated every 128 fields in order to provide ample samples for the reader to detect and display the source identification data.

In order to bury watermark information in an original one-dimensional data, first a 1st spread one-dimensional data x(t) is generated by spreading the spectrum of the original one-dimensional data s(t) by using a PN series g(t). Then the 1st spread one-dimensional data is subjected to modified discrete cosine transformation. The specific frequency component value of the MDCT coefficient is so adjusted as to correspond to the watermark information. By subjecting the adjusted frequency component to the reverse conversion, a 2nd spread one-dimensional data x'(t) is generated. Lastly, by the reverse spectrum-spreading using the same PN series as those used in the spectrum-spreading, watermark one-dimensional data in which the watermark information is buried is generated.

A method of embedding sound field control factors (SFC factors) into a sound source. The method includes coding sound field factors and sound field information to obtain sound field control factors for the sound source in a binary data type, and the sound field factors represent an acoustic characteristic of the sound source and the sound field information represents an environment under which the sound source is recorded, and watermarking the sound field control factors into the sound source without compressing the sound source. In this method, the SFC factors that represent characteristics of the sound source are embedded into the sound source itself using a digital watermarking technology. Therefore, the SFC factors need not be manually set by a user. In addition, the SFC factors can be reliably transmitted, irrespective of header corruption caused by format conversion and transmission of a compressed sound source.
