An Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)-based distributed virtual tandem switching system is provided in which a network of ATM-based devices is combined to create a distributed virtual tandem switch. The system includes an ATM switching network that dynamically sets up individual switched virtual connections. The system also includes a trunk interworking function (T-IWF) device and a centralized control and signaling interworking function (CS-IWF) device. The trunk interworking function device converts end office voice trunks from TDM channels to ATM cells by employing a structured circuit emulation service. The centralized control and signaling interworking function device performs call control functions and interfaces narrowband signaling and broadband signaling for call processing and control within the ATM switching network. Consequently, the ATM based distributed virtual tandem switching system replaces a standard tandem switch in the PSTN.

Pulse Code Modulations (PCM) signal streams are converted into Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) cells for switching and transmissions across a telecommunications network. Each cell carries one PCM sample of up to 48 different voice connections, the voice connections being selected from the PCM data streams because they have a common destination. The cells are transmitted over ATM virtual paths, each path transmitting one cell every 125 mu s. The ATM signals are switched by units for switching cells (cell switching), while keeping their payload contents intact, and by units for switching the signals for individual voice connections between cells of an ATM signal (cell remapping). Advantageously, ATM transmission systems interface with PCM systems without adding appreciable delay and without requiring additional buffering. Advantageously, new voice paths can be established most of the time by using available slots in the cells of existing virtuals paths. Advantageously, large telecommunication networks can be implemented using a small number of switching units. Advantageously, a central communications network comprising stages of cell remapping interconnected by one or more stages of cell switching provides flexibility for interconnecting large access switched; the cell remapping stage may be made part of the access switch. Advantageously, an access switch comprising a cell mapping or distribution stage for assembling cells comprising PCM samples headed for a common output of the access switch are switched in a cell switch to a cell remap unit for collecting PCM samples headed for a common destination into individual cells of an ATM output stream, provides output signals that can be readily and efficiently switched by a transit network for distribution to other access switches of a large network. Apparatus and a method for establishing voice band telecommunications connections using a cross connect/switching system (CCSS) for establishing all or part of the connection setments required for individual calls. The CCSS contains bundles of provisioned paths and also has facilities for establishing individual per call paths which do not use these bundles. When a call is received, the CCSS switches the call through a combination of provisioned and unprovisioned paths. In the preferred embodiment, the CCSS is an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch enhanced with converters to communicate with pulse code modulation (PCM) facilities for communicating with other switches and with associated PCM switches. Terminal adapters are provided in either the CCSS or the associated switches or both for processing voice signals to perform functions such as echo cancellation or speech quality enhancement. Advantageously, such a switch can support a very large node that carries extensive wideband and broadband signal traffic as well as the voice band traffic.
