An energy absorbing vehicle barrier includes a frame defining a compartment. In one embodiment, the frame includes a nose. An energy absorbing cartridge is disposed within the compartment. A retaining device is coupled to the frame, with the retaining device disposed above and extending over at least a portion of an upper surface of the cartridge. The retaining device may contact and engage the upper surface of the cartridge when the barrier is impacted by a vehicle. In this way, the retaining device substantially prevents movement of the cartridge in at least a vertical direction during the impact. Methods of using and assembling the barrier are also provided.

The convoluted path that the cables (15) must follow through the impact head of the invention restricts movement of the cable (15) through the head, thereby providing sufficient friction to slow down the movement of the impact head during a vehicle impact. Also disclosed is a method of constructing a guardrail including the steps of slidably interconnecting a plurality of rails and attaching them to posts, positioning the impact head as claimed at one end of the slidably interconnected rails, threading at least one cable through the impact head and anchoring the cable to the ground.

Selon l'invention, les éléments de retenue longitudinaux sont fixés rigidement sur les tiges de telle manière qu'en cas de choc avec un véhicule, les tiges restent solidaires des éléments de retenue et la tige est un profilé métallique en C droit dont la résistance est telle qu'en cas de choc avec un véhicule, la tige puisse plier sous l'action, d'une part, vers le bas de la tige, du pliage du poteau de la barrière de sécurité et, d'autre part, vers le haut de la tige, de l'effet de tirage longitudinal des éléments de retenue longitudinaux, ledit pliage de la tige et ladite fixation de la tige permettant que la déformation finale avant-arrière du dispositif de retenue corresponde sensiblement au pliage du poteau de la barrière de sécurité.
