There is provided a shaped article made of porous hydrogel that contains a polyvinyl alcohol acetalized with a dialdehyde, wherein the shaped article after freeze-drying has a pore size of 0.1 to 50 µ m. Preferably, the shaped article made of porous hydrogel further contains a water-soluble polysaccharide. Also preferably, an acetalization degree of the polyvinyl alcohol is 1 to 50 mol%. Also preferably, the shaped article made of porous hydrogel is in the form of particles with a sphere-equivalent diameter of 1 to 20 mm. Such a shaped article made of porous hydrogel exhibits high strength and good survivability of microorganisms.

A wastewater treatment method and process returns the whole excess sludge mixes it with the influent wastewater. The mixed flow is introduced in distributed in the bottom of a treatment tank. High turbulence aeration is done in the middle or upper parts of the treatment tank. Anoxic, anaerobic, facultative and aerobic zones are formed while the mixed flow is travelling from bottom of the treatment tank to the top. Due to futile cycle around the aeration and facultative zone right beneath the aeration the excess biological sludge production is eliminated. This process also can remove odor and can denitrify nitrate. There is a new type of packing media with high specific surface area without clogging that has been introduced and described in this invention. The present invention can be used for different application including domestic or industrial wastewater treatment, large or small. The described packing media can be used in different wastewater treatment plants or in aquaculture and cooling, contact or stripping towers.

An object is to provide a sea water desalinating method that is capable of efficiently producing purified water, such as fresh water, from unpurified water, such as sea water. There is a step of carrying out a wastewater treatment by subjecting inorganic wastewater to precipitation and separation. Thus obtained supernatant water is further filtered e.g. by sand filtration means, microfiltration or ultrafiltation and the permeate is directed to the reverse osmosis unit. The RO concentrate is considered low salt concentration water and is mixed, as diluent water, into sea water to produce mixed water. The mixed water prepared by the mixing is finally subjected to reverse osmosis membrane filtration, thereby generating fresh water.

Provided is a fresh water generating method for generating fresh water by way of reverse osmosis membrane filtration, which includes filtering low salt concentration water having a salt concentration lower than sea water by way of reverse osmosis, mixing it with sea water to produce mixed water, and subjecting the mixed water prepared by the above mixing to reverse osmosis membrane filtration, thereby generating fresh water. The amount of low salt concentration wastewater is measured and used for controlling the filtration rate in both reverse osmosis filtration units.

A system and method are provided for removal of undesirable substances from a body of liquid. The system can include an aeration structure having a continuously inclined surface configured to provide an interaction of air bubbles against substantially an entire length of the continuously inclined surface while the air bubbles are moving toward a top of the body of liquid. The continuously inclined surface can be substantially submerged in the body of liquid. A bio-film of diverse bacteria colonies is disposed on the continuously inclined surface, and a high surface area-to-volume structure is located in proximity to the aeration structure, upon which a bio-film of bacteria colonies can be formed. An aeration system is coupled to an air supply system which releases the air bubbles toward a bottom of the continuously inclined surface, such that the air bubbles move along the continuously inclined surface as they rise so as to (i) create a variety of aerobic-anaerobic conditions at the bio-film and (ii) engage the air bubbles in a continuous mixing of a micro climate for the bio-film in response to an orientation of the continuously inclined surface and (iii) provide airlift circulation of water from bottom to top of the aeration structure.
