A gaseous mixture (101), comprising CO 2 , H 2 , H 2 S and optionally CO, is separated into an H 2 or H 2 and CO product stream (103) (H 2 /CO product stream), and a CO 2 enriched stream (104) containing at least one combustible component selected from H 2 S, H 2 , CO and any additional combustible components present in the gaseous mixture. A support fuel stream (109), comprising one or more combustible components, is combusted to form a stable flame, and the CO 2 enriched stream and flame are contacted in the presence of sufficient O 2 to combust all or substantially all of the combustible component(s) present in said CO 2 enriched stream. A CO 2 product stream is formed from said combustion effluent (113). The support fuel stream may be generated from the process of generating or separating the gaseous mixture or from the H 2 /CO product stream. Where the CO 2 enriched stream contains H 2 S, the support fuel stream may also be a stream obtained off-site that comprises H 2 S.

The invention provides methods and apparatus ultimately for converting a carbonaceous material to liquid hydrocarbons suitable for use, for example, as transportation fuels. In a first step the carbonaceous material is converted to a syngas product, and in subsequent steps the syngas product is converted to the desired liquid hydrocarbons. In one embodiment, coal and methane are converted to syngas, and the syngas product is converted to hydrocarbons through a methanol intermediate. An example use for the methods and apparatus of the invention is in the preparation of aviation fuels.

The system comprises a two-stage process, the first stage separating heavy metals and particulate matter in a dry phase, and the second stage including further processing steps of removing acid gases, and/or other contaminants. Optional processes include adjusting the humidity and temperature of the input gas as it passes through the gas conditioning system. The presence and sequence of processing steps is determined by the composition of the input gas, the desired composition of output gas for downstream applications, and by efficiency and waste minimization.

The present invention provides for a process for the production of syngas from hydrocarbon and oxygen feeds in a reactor A over a monolithic catalyst. The syngas is cooled in a number of stages including water quench stage B, compressed in a compressor G, and has carbon dioxide removed from it in adsorbent column I. The resulting gas mixture is separated cryogenically in cold box P by means of a partial condensation stage P1 to produce hydrogen gas and a residual liquid, a stripping stage P2 to remove dissolved hydrogen from the residual liquid, and a fractionation stage P3 to produce a pure carbon monoxide product from the stripped residual liquid. The hydrogen gas from stage P1 is recycled to the compressor G.
