An active noise suppression apparatus and method for reducing jet engine noise and buffeting. A plurality of resonant cavities (12) are formed in a structural member disposed on or adjacent to a jet engine exhaust nozzle (22). Each resonant cavity opens toward an output slot. A compressed air chamber is used to supply a pressurized, supersonic jetstream airflow through the inlet port (16) into the interior area of the resonant cavity (12). This causes a high frequency, pulsed, excitation airstream to be generated outwardly form the cavity, out of the output slot and into the developing shear layer of the exhaust airflow. This high frequency, pulsed, excitation airstream induces modifications in the shear layer, which leads to a major reduction in the noise and buffeting generated by the developing shear layer.

Said first electroacoustic transducer converts sound waves (30) into first signals (31) which are a measure of the frequency, amplitude and phase of the sound waves (30). An electronic control unit (16, 16') converts the first signals (31) into second signals (32). At least one second electroacoustic transducer (8, 8') is situated centrally in the air inlet (3) before the engine (5) and/or centrally in the gas outlet (4) after the engine (5). Said second electroacoustic transducer converts the second signals (32) into compensating sound waves (33) which have a frequency, amplitude and phase so that the sound waves (30) and the compensating sound waves (33) at least partially cancel each other out. The device can also be used for diagnosing the status or functioning of the jet engine and to this end, has a comparison unit (17, 17') in which the first signals (31) of the first electroacoustic transducer (7, 7') are compared with specified signals.
