The present invention provides an anti-corrosion composition for a metal surface, especially of pre-stressing steel, the anti-corrosion composition being thixotropic and comprising an organic component which is an oil, fat or wax. The anti-corrosion composition of the invention is characterized in that it is translucent and also comprises an indicator which responds to corrosion of the metal surface by changing its absorption spectrum in the region of ultra-violet, visible or infra-red light, in particular with a colour change. Further provided in accordance with the invention are a metal structure bearing the anti-corrosion composition of the invention, an apparatus on the metal structure, and a method for checking the metal structure.

[Problem] Remaining service life of a metal pipe suffering from creep damage is measured without scraping the surface of the metal pipe. [Solution] In a remaining service life evaluation method according to the present invention, the remaining service life of a metal pipe (1) suffering from creep damage is evaluated on the basis of a master curve that is prepared in advance. The master curve is prepared by performing an internal pressure creep test in a state in which a steel strip (2), made of a metal material having a thermal expansion coefficient and strength of the metal pipe or greater, is wrapped under tension around an outer peripheral face of a test piece (11) made of the same material and having the same inner and outer diameters as the metal pipe. The master curve indicates a relationship between a degree of deterioration of the steel strip and remaining service life of the metal pipe. To evaluate the remaining service life, a steel strip is wrapped around an outer peripheral face of the metal pipe under the same conditions as those during the internal pressure creep test. The degree of deterioration of the steel strip with the use of the metal pipe is then measured, and applied to the master curve.

The system includes sensors for measuring magnetic field gradients from a standoff distance adjacent to ferromagnetic material. The method includes using the system to measure magnetic fields, determining magnetic field gradients measured by a sensor array, and comparing measured and modeled or historical magnetic field gradients at the same or similar positions to identify differences caused by a phenomenon in the ferromagnetic material, and, in a particular embodiment, to recognize defects and developing defects.

The method is useful for determining the fatigue life of gas turbine engine discs or gas turbine engine rotor blades particularly the firtree shaped disc posts or the firtree shaped rotor blade roots.

A corrosion monitoring system (110) includes at least one corrosion sensor (100). The corrosion sensor (100) includes a metallic plug (104) having at least one opening, at least one ceramic sheath (106) in the opening of the metallic plug (104), and a plurality of probes (102). Each probe (102) has a central portion with a predetermined cross sectional area extending from the metallic plug (104). The ceramic sheath (106) electrically isolates each first end and each second end of the probes (102) from the metallic plug (104) and the other first ends and second ends. The probes (102) are sized to provide a range of predetermined cross sectional areas of the central portions. Such arrangement permits to extend the lifespan of the system since when one probe has been completely corroded, measurement can be switched to another probe having a higher cross sectional area and which is still operational.The corrosion monitoring system (110) also includes a resistance meter (112) measuring an ohmic resistance for at least one of the probes (102) and a computer (116) determining a corrosion rate by correlating a rate of change of the ohmic resistance to the corrosion rate of the probe (102). The corrosion monitoring system (100) is particularly suitable for real-time corrosion monitoring of components in the hot gas path of turbines.

Thus, even when the steel is a high-strength steel having a yield strength of 758 MPa or higher, the occurrence of the failure in the shoulder section is suppressed, and the resistance to sulfide stress corrosion cracking can be properly evaluated.

The invention relates to a method for determining the corrosion risk of installations in natural waters due to biofilm formation, comprising: a) providing a device for measuring electrode potentials, which comprises at least one metal sample and at least one reference electrode, at a point in the immediate vicinity of the installation within the body of water of the natural water; b) measuring potential differences between the at least one metal sample and the at least one reference electrode over a sufficient period of time such that any potential drift of the sample caused by ennoblement due to biofilm formation can be determined; c) comparing the measured potential difference with one or more reference values for the metal of the metal sample; and d) estimating if or when the potential difference, because of biofilm formation, has reached or can reach a critical value that brings about corrosion of said metal at said point of the natural water.
