A magnetic vector field (32) in the permanent magnet and the coil (23) is generated due to the magnetic flux. The permanent magnet is separated by the coil (23) by a main gap (31). Furthermore, the permanent magnet comprises a main gap facing surface portion. The main gap facing surface portion of the permanent magnet is at least partially covered by a layer (15) for concentrating the magnetic vector field in the permanent magnet and the coil (23), thus increasing the magnetic flux between the permanent magnet and the coil (23). Exemplarily, the layer (14) comprises a ferrous material.

A drive shaft (50) inserted into a hollowed part (60b) of the cylindrical member (collar) (60) is provided. The collar (60) is made of the material having a lower Young's modulus than those of the rotor core (12) and the drive shaft (50), and is formed such that an inner peripheral surface of the collar (60) is a tapered surface (60a). The drive shaft (50) has, at an outer periphery thereof, a tapered surface (54a) such that the tapered surface (54a) is in surface contact with the tapered surface (60a) of the collar (60) in fitting of the drive shaft (50) into the collar (60).

An IPM motor for a vacuum pump suitable for use as a motor for a small vacuum pump is provided. The IPM motor for a vacuum pump includes: a rotor core in which a rotor shaft of the vacuum pump is pressed and which also has magnets embedded therein; and a stator core which surrounds the rotor core and around which stator windings are wound. The magnets per pole embedded in the rotor core are each split into two pieces and inserted in respective magnet slots in the rotor core. A hole for stress concentration relaxation is provided at either end of each pair of magnet slots in which permanent magnets split into two pieces are embedded in each pole. The rotor core has a multilayer structure having a plurality of rotor core laminations stacked vertically in an axial direction of the rotor shaft. The rotor core laminations stacked vertically are positioned with a skew angle determined by using the holes for stress concentration relaxation.

An annular rotor section, which surrounds a shaft opening within which the shaft is receivable, extends between the shaft opening and a radially outer circumferential rotor surface. The annular section mentioned includes an undulating series of the voids in void groups extending from the radially outer circumferential rotor surface inwardly toward the shaft opening and then back toward the radially outer circumferential rotor surface, as well as a solid radially interior portion without any of the voids. Distal voids in the void groups include curved, arcuate, or recurved stress relieving features extending inwardly from radially innermost corner locations of the distal voids.

A thickness of the magnetic body in the direction in which the teeth protrude becomes thicker as a distance to the rotor becomes shorter.
