Systems and methods for managing a network are described. A view of current state of the network is maintained where the current state of the network characterizes network topology and network constituents, including network entities and network elements residing in or on the network. Events are announced that correspond to changes in the state of the network and one or more network elements can be configured accordingly. Methods for managing network traffic are described that ensure forwarding and other actions taken by network elements implement globally declared network policy and refer to high-level names, independently of network topology and the location of network constituents. Methods for discovering network constituents are described, whereby are automatically configured. Routing may be performed using ACL and packets can be intercepted to permit host to continue in sleep mode. The methods are applicable to virtual environments.

Note, as used herein, "Alarm Indication Signal (ETH-AIS)" refers to an IEEE 802.x or ITU-T Y.1731 Ethernet Alarm Indication Signal. A device receiving the Ethernet frame with the consolidated ETH-AIS information typically forwards the frame out each port that communicates traffic for one of the VLANs included in the consolidated ETH-AIS information.

A method and system for service protection based on the Dual Node Interconnection (DNI) protection structure in the transport network are provided. When creating a DNI protection group based on the DNI protection structure, a plurality of services are configured in one direction, wherein one of the multiple services is a working service, and the others are protection services; the multiple services have the same add node and drop node, but not exactly the same passed interconnection nodes; on each interconnection node of the add ring, two services in the DNI protection group transferred through the local node to the drop ring are adapted as two services in a 1+1 protection group; on the drop node, the services in the DNI protection group are adapted as the two services in a 1+1 protection group transferred from two directions of the drop ring; when a fault occurs, said interconnection node and said drop node execute a switching according to the 1+1 protection protocol, and implement the protection for the services in the DNI protection group. The present invention can accomplish the protection capability of the DNI protection structure.

The invention, in one aspect, relates to a system for providing for the display of data from a plurality of non-homogeneous medical devices. In one embodiment the system includes a local authority to receive data using a first protocol from the medical devices and convert the data to a second protocol, a central authority in communication with the local authority, and a user interface, in communication with the central authority. The central authority routes data that has been converted to a second protocol for display by the user interface. The system generates alarms when a data value from one medical device reaches an alarm limit; deviates from a setting as a deviation alarm; and when a combination of data values from more than one medical device occurs, as a combination alarm; and if an alarm is triggered more than a predetermined number of times, as a consecutive alarm.
