A starter motor assembly is provided. A motor housing encloses an electric motor having a rotatable armature shaft. A planetary gear assembly is provided in a pinion housing, including planetary gears, a planet carrier, and a drive shaft. A pinion is engageable with the drive shaft for turning a flywheel of an engine. A non-load-bearing overrunning clutch assembly is provided, including an outer clutch piece removably fixed with respect to the pinion housing to be non-rotatable, and a rotatable inner clutch piece engaged with the planetary gears. Structure provided between the outer and inner clutch pieces allows rotation of the inner clutch piece in one direction and locks up the inner clutch piece in the other direction. When the starter motor assembly is energized, rotation of the armature shaft and planetary gears at a first rotational velocity rotates the inner clutch piece in the lockup direction. The inner clutch piece locks up, and the planetary gears race around the inner clutch piece and transmit rotation of the armature shaft to the drive shaft and the pinion to crank the engine. After the engine starts, rotation of the flywheel, drive shaft, and planetary gears at a second higher velocity rotates the inner clutch piece in the rotation direction, which absorbs the higher rotational velocity of the engine. The clutch assembly can be reversed inside the housing for use with either a clockwise-rotating motor or a counterclockwise-rotating motor.

To achieve this, a shifter motor 19 is provided as an actuator for shifting between a gear for reversing the vehicle by a starter motor 17 and a mode for starting an engine 9 by the starter motor 17. A switch panel 12 is provided adjacent to a handle grip 13, and a starter/reverse switch 121 for controlling the starter motor 17 and a reverse shift switch 122 for controlling a shifter motor 19 are disposed adjacent to each other on an operation surface of the switch panel 12. To reduce the size of a starter for installing it in a smaller engine compartment, the rotational speed of the starter motor ( 2 ) has to be high and it is reduced to a certain speed through a reduction device to obtain a higher torque. To realize a high reduction ratio in a small planetary gear reduction device, an impact force imposed on the device at an instant a starter pinion ( 65 ) engages with a engine ring gear ( 14 ) and repeating impacts during a cranking period must be reduced. As a coupling ( 7 ) between an internal gear and a housing of the reduction device, a flexible or a resilient coupling is disclosed herein. The flexible or resilient coupling relieves an excessive impact force at the engagement by permitting rotation of the internal gear ( 44, 244 ) relative to the housing ( 1, 5 ), and reduces noise caused by the cranking impacts by permitting a small vibrating move of the internal gear. The flexible coupling is realized by a combination of a bumpy surface ( 70 ) and projections ( 71 ) coupled thereto. The resilient coupling is realized by pushing a spring ( 208 ) against the bumpy surface ( 270 ).
