A pair of oppositely-projecting "ears" (28) are integrally formed on the strut proximate to one (24) of its end surfaces at one station (62) of the progressive die. The ears cooperate with a complementary recess (32) within a pocket (22) formed in the first member's planar clutch face (20) to thereby nominally position and maintain the one of the strut's end surfaces within the pocket. A surface (44) on each ear is preferably coined at another station (56) of the progressive die to thereby provide a relief which prevents deleterious contact between the ears and the opposed clutch face (32) of the second member (12).

This invention is embodied in a mechanical clutch capable of transferring a large force or torque from an input member to an output member by the application of a very small control force or torque. This clutch is capable of performing many non- slipping power engagements per second. When configured as a following mechanical servo, this clutch becomes the crux of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) suitable for automotive use. In such use, mechanical power may be transferred very precisely by a controlling power of much lower level than the power being transmitted through the clutch mechanism. The automotive literature shows many articles which propose 20%-25 % fuel efficiency improvement obtained by using a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Today's commercial CVT's have a stepless changing mechanical advantage which is a function of variable pitch diameter ratios, as with wide Vee belts, traction drives. All of these have insufficient power ratings for automotive use. The hydrostatic CVT's operate by the exchange of variable fluid volumes, and have power ratings to drive earth movers. But they suffer from low efficiency and high cost.

A device for the control of a free wheel coupling for a motor vehicle comprises a lock (27) mounted slidingly in a bell (8) integral with the driving shaft (2a) engageable in a cage (12) provided with rollers (24) and oscillatingly mounted in the bell (8) between two limit positions on which the rollers (24) and the bell (12) and in bearing relationship and provide for the rotation coupling of the driving shaft (2a) and the driven shaft (2b), the lock (27) maintaining the cage (12) between a medium position wherein the driven shaft (2b) is idle and one of the limit positions. When in forward gear and outside braking phases, an electromagnet (31) draws the lock (27) in the cage (12). From a predetermined speed, a safety system recouples automatically the driving and driven shafts.

The clutch assembly also includes a cage assembly, a seal and a retaining ring. The cage assembly includes a skeleton coupled to a spring ring having a plurality of radially extending guides arranged to circumferentially space apart each roller element in alignment with cam surfaces formed on the outer race. The guides are resiliently deformable to allow concurrent engagement of each roller element with both the inner and outer races. The seal engages an inner surface of the outer race and an outer surface of the inner race, and is positioned axially outboard of the roller elements. The retaining ring is positioned within ring grooves formed on each of the inner and outer races to restrict movement of the cage.
