A drop generator for use in an ink jet printer is capable of stimulating long ink jet arrays at high operating frequencies. The drop generator comprises a substantially uniform cross section for a central portion and two end sections with different cross sections. The end sections have features to adjust a resonant frequency of the end sections to match that of the central portion. In particular, these features comprise cuts on a top of the drop generator. The drop generator utilizes multi-lobed radial bending modes for vibration of an array of orifices, and the vibrational modes are driven by at least two rows of transducers which extend substantially the length of the drop generator. The transducers are placed consistent with a lobe structure of an operational radial bending mode.

A droplet generator and ink jet printhead assembly employing the droplet generator are disclosed. The assembly includes nozzle (12) having orifice (15), liquid reservoir or supply (16) for containing a liquid (30) to be emitted from nozzle (12) and non-resonant elastically deformable fluid conduit (18) for conveying liquid (30) from liquid reservoir (16) to nozzle (12). Transducer (20) is disposed in an abutting relation with fluid conduit (18) a predetermined distance(s) from the nozzle (12). Transducer (20) is energized by a suitable electrical signal, such as a sinusoidal signal. Transducer (20) causes compression of conduit (18) and provides a wave which propagates along fluid conduit (18) and fluid (30) contained therein toward nozzle (12) and orifice (15). This wave acts to perturb the stream formed at orifice (15) and to initiate the break-up of the stream into droplets. The utilization of an elastically deformable non-resonant conduit (18) between transducer (20) and nozzle (12) mechanically decouples nozzle (12) from the remainder of the printhead assembly and provides filtering of undesired frequencies which might otherwise be imparted to fluid (30) and nozzle (12).

A brazing process is provided for joining machined resonator portions (1A,1B) to yield a single resonator body (1) for a continuous ink jet printhead. A first resonator body portion (1A) and a second resonator body portion (1B) are provided, each resonator portion having partial fluid ingress (8), fluid egress (9), and nozzle plate (2) channel fluid cavities. A braze preform is then insertable between the first and second resonator body portions to join the first and second resonator body portions. Alignment pins secure and align the first resonator body portion (1A) to the second resonator body portion (1B).

A charge electrode 3 applies charge to selected droplets and a deflection electrode 4 deflects the path 20 of the charged droplets to cause printing on a substrate. A gutter 6 collects droplets which are not required for printing. A charge electrode 3, together with one of the deflection electrodes 4 is movable in a direction transverse to the path of the droplets selectively under the action of pressurised ink fed from an ink supply 14. Similarly, the gutter 6 is movable in the same way.

The body is shaped and tuned to vibrate substantially only in the longitudinal mode and at a resonant frequency which is within ten percent of a frequency to excite natural resonant vibrations in the ink in the cavity between the end of the body and the nozzle plate, the width of the body being less than the length of the nozzle array or of that part of the array associated with that body.

The mounting arrangement comprises vertical slots (20) located perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the array and body (16).
