The present invention offers a universal guide device capable of using the sliders of conventional straight guide devices without alteration. The universal guide device does not need a different slider for each different radius of track rail. The universal guide device can be manufactured at lower cost than heretofore. This universal guide device in accordance with the invention comprises a track rail (1;1';7) and sliders (2;8) mounted to the rail via balls (3) circulating through endless circular paths. The rail has at least one straight region (1A;1'A;7A) and at least one curved region (1B;1'B;7B) shaped in an arc with a given radius of curvature (R;R1; R2). Each of the sliders (2;8) is of saddlelike cross section. The sliders (2;8) span the rail (1;1';7). The sliders (2;8) have ball-rolling surfaces (43a,43b;81a, 81b) shaped linearly. The curved region (1B;1'B;7B) of the rail is set narrower than the straight region (1A;1'A;7A) of the rail.

A vibration is applied to the abutment member with the tip end portion thereof abutting against the work surface, and the scribe body is relatively moved along the work surface to thereby form a scribe line on the work surface. In this scribing method, a first angle constituted by the first ridgeline of the abutment member and the work surface and a second angle constituted by the second ridgeline thereof and the work surface are made different from each other and the first and second ridgelines are opposed in the moving direction of the scribe body.

A lubricant pocket forming member having a concave groove portion for forming a lubricant pocket constituted of the elastic members and filled with lubricant by a help of the surface of the track shaft as well is provided so as to achieve a smooth reciprocating motion of the sliding member (2) with respect to the track shaft (1) with less sliding friction. Particularly, under even a severe use condition in which use of coolant is required or dust, dirt, wooden pieces, cutting powder or the like falls on the guide unit, a smooth reciprocating motion of the sliding member with respect to the track shaft can be maintained in a long period.

In order to achieve this object, according to the present invention, there is provided a spherical joint comprising: an inner member (1; 21) having a convex-spherical surface (5); an outer member (2; 24) cast by using the inner member (1; 21) as a core and so connected to the inner member (1; 21) as to rock and rotate relative to the inner member (1; 21); and a bushing (3; 27) sandwiched between the inner member (1; 21) and the outer member (2;24) and having a concave-spherical surface (8) for sliding contact with the convex-spherical surface (5) of the inner member (1; 21). When the outer member (2; 24) is to be cast, the bushing (3; 27) made of a thin metal is partially fused to and rigidly unified with the cast outer member (2; 24).
