The invention also includes venting means (51) to allow air passage between the interior of the member (43) and the adjacent chamber (15), as well as engagement means (85) for engaging a rear surface of the floodlight (14) to retain it firmly against an internal flange of the member (43). A reflector (61), capable of being compressed to allow insertion or removal, is located within the heat conducting member's interior between the floodlight (14) and filter (35) to reflect infrared radiation toward the filter (35) and spaced lens (12).

The assembly (10) includes a common holder member (11) designed for being aligned within the motor vehicle and a plurality (e.g., four or five) of replaceable, sealed lighting modules (15) to provide the necessary illumination. Each module (15) includes a plastic reflector (17), a low wattage tungsten halogen capsule (19), and a glass or plastic lens (25) for providing a seal for the module. A motor vehicle headlight module capable of being used as part of a headlighting assembly containing several (e.g., at least four) such modules therein. Each assembly (10) may in turn provide one-half of the total forward lighting system for a motor vehicle. Each module (15) includes a high temperature plastic parabolic reflector (17), a low wattage (e.g., 18 watts) tungsten halogen capsule (19), and a planer glass lens (25) for providing a seal for the module. Each module (15) is adapted for being readily aligned within a holder member which forms part of such an assembly and may be retained therein by relatively simple means (e.g., a wireform (41). The invention further includes a connector means (65) (e.g., female socket) designed for being slidably positioned on the rear neck portion of the invention's reflector (17) to effect contact with the invention's capsule (19).

A phosphor layer within the sealed envelope subtends the major body portion of the envelope. The surface brightness of the phosphor layer as viewed through the minor transverse end portion of the envelope is greater than the intensity of the external surface brightness of the phosphor layer on the major body portion of the envelope during operation of the lamp. A lamp array for use as an element in a picture display is also disclosed including a plurality of sealed envelopes. In the case of a color presentation of information, one picture element is composed of three sealed envelopes phosphor coated with the primary colors red, green and blue.

An electric lamp having an envelope, formed from a lens and a reflector that are sealed together by adhesive means, a light source and a base. The adhesive means has a curing temperature that is equal to or higher than the operating temperature of the lamp and a higher index of thermal expansion than the lens and reflector material. The adhesive means includes an epoxy, that is either heat or ultraviolet curable, which is disposed on the sealing surfaces of the glass lens and reflector. Sealing in this fashion obviates the need for flame sealing the glass lens and reflector together and results in a lamp that is substantially free from thermally induced strains in either the lens or the reflector.
