Drive means (61, 63) are provided which move the cutting tool (19) into a reciprocating forward and backward motion parallel to the axis of the log (L) to be cut. At least at the time when the blade is cutting the log, the blade is moving parallel to the moving log at a translation speed substantially equal to the feeding speed of the log (L), so as to allow the cutting of small rolls (R) without stopping the log (L).

An apparatus for cutting spirally formed pipe (14) is disclosed. The pipe cutting apparatus has an inner knife (140) positioned inside a pipe (14) and an annular outer knife (212) positioned outside the pipe (14). The inner knife (140) moves from an inner position within the pipe (14) to an outer position where the knife contacts an interior surface of the pipe during the cutting operation. The inner knife (140) also revolves in an annular pattern about the centerline of the pipe such that a cutting edge of the inner knife (140) contacts the entire interior periphery of the pipe during the cutting operation. The annular outer knife (212) has a cutting edge adjacent an exterior surface of the pipe. The outer knife cutting edge surrounds the pipe and is in a position to overlap the inner knife cutting edge. The inner and outer knives (140, 212) move in the axial direction of the pipe during the cutting operation, and the inner knife (140) cooperates with the outer knife (212) to cut the pipe.

Described is an apparatus (26) for in-line cropping and/or chamfering of a plastic tube which comprises pressure rollers for deforming a tube section and cutting devices to perform the cropping and/or chamfering operation. The control of movement of the pressure rollers and cutting devices is carried out by a combination (12, 13) of a face cam and a rotor disc; said face cam and rotor disc have according to the invention the same diameter and may be given rotaryspeeds which are related to each other in any desired way. Control is carried out preferably with use of an interference box (6, 7). The invention also relates to a method for cropping and/or chamfering wherein the chip length can be regulated by intermittent operation of the cropping and/or chamfering action.

An improved apparatus for cutting an enveloped body, which consists of an assembly having at least three circumferentially disposed cutting members with at least two sliding surfaces. The cutting members are assembled in sliding contact with each other such that the sliding surfaces of adjacent cutting members are slidable along each other so as to form or close a central opening surrounded by the cutting members. The opening is opened and closed for cutting the enveloped body passing therethrough. One sliding surface of a cutting member forms a convex surface, and the other sliding surface forms a concave surface complementary to the convex surface, so that the convex surface of a cutting member slides on the concave surface of an adjacent cutting member.

A machine is described for cutting large diameter wound logs of paper or similar web material such as toilet tissue and the like into relatively small discs for use specially in institutional dispensers. The machine includes a cradle and transport means (5) for inserting a large diameter log (B) of paper into a gripper (23) which holds the log securely and stationary while a band saw (7) cuts the discs of paper from the log. The gripper (23) includes a ring through which the log passes, said ring including a plurality of radially movable plungers which support and retain the log within the ring while the band saw is cutting a disc from the log. The mechanism also includes an automatic guide and sharpening station for maintaining the sharpness of the band saw and, furthermore, includes a support and discharge mechanism for removing the discs of paper from the gripper.

A system for handling a flexible thin wall tubular extrudate (17) and for cutting-off a predetermined length sleeve (18) of the extrudate (17) and delivering the sleeve (18) to a discharge station (23). A pair of grippers (7,8) is movably mounted on carriage assemblies (5,6) which move the grippers horizontally and transversely with respect to the axis of the extrudate (17). The leading gripper provides tension to the extrudate and pulls it along a production axis. The grippers completely (7,8) circumferentially envelop the length of sleeve (18) to be cut from the extrudate (17) and retain the shape of the extrudate by applying a vacuum thereto. After completion of the actual cutting operation the leading gripper transfers the severed sleeve to a discharge station (23) and returns to a home position and now becomes the trailing gripper. The previous trailing gripper becomes the leading gripper and continues to advance the extrudate (17) along the production axis and apply tension thereto for the next cutting operation.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for very efficiently and economically manufacturing spirally-wound, heat-shrinkable cylindrical bands or members. These members can be very advantageously employed for forming tamper-evident seals on containers, and to this end an apparatus and method are disclosed for efficiently applying the members to containers. The heat-shrinkable members can also be employed for fabrication of cup-like containers, and a method of forming such containers is also disclosed.
