In certain example embodiments of this invention, a reflector is made by (a) forming a reflective coating on a thin substantially flat glass substrate (the thin glass substrate may or may not be pre-bent prior to the coating being applied thereto), (b) optionally, if the glass substrate in (a) was not prebent, then cold-bending the glass substrate with the reflective coating thereon; and (c) applying a plate or frame member to the thin bent glass substrate with the coating thereon from (a) and/or (b), the plate or frame member (which may be another thicker pre-bent glass sheet, for example) for maintaining the thin glass substrate and coating thereon in a desired bent orientation in a final product which may be used as parabolic trough or dish type reflector in a concentrating solar power apparatus or the like.

In certain example embodiments, a sol-gel coating is applied, in a wet form, over a reflective coating of a first surface mirror. The sol-gel coating is then heated following its application, to drive off liquid(s) of the sol-gel so that the coating densifies and forms a solid protective coating over the reflective coating. In certain example embodiments, the protective coating may be of or include silica or the like so as to protect the reflective coating and improve durability.

Curved surfaces particularly reflectors such as concave mirror elements for use in astronomical telescopes, solar energy concentrators etc., and methods of forming such surfaces. A rigid body with a curved surface is formed by providing a mould (20) having a curved surface with a curvature opposite to that of the required curved surface, applying a vacuum to the curved surface of the mould to deform a flexible, generally planar member (14) to match the curved surface of the mould and bonding a front surface of a structurally rigid base member (12) to the opposite surface of the planar flexible member while the vacuum is applied. Peripheral casing members (16, 18) may he bonded to the base member. The base member is formed from a rigid, low-density material such as an aluminium or aluminium alloy honeycomb material. The flexible (reflective) member may comprise a thin metallic sheet such as an anodised aluminium alloy sheet, and any casing members may also be of aluminium or aluminium alloy.

A solar concentrated module with a bidimensional parabolic profile geometry, comprises one or more rigid self-supporting panels having a parabolic cross section and a rectilinear longitudinal extension. The said panels comprise a central sandwich structure including a central honeycomb core and two thin outer skins of a high resistance material, forming a lightweight and particularly rigid construction. The panels adapted to support thin reflecting surfaces, the geometry of which is such as to concentrate incident sunlight rays along a longitudinal receiving tube, within which a fluid to be headed flows. An automated driver may be provided for moving the panels to follow the movement of the sun during the day.
