摘要:
The present invention provides a high current pulse generator for DC powered devices. The generator includes batteries as the power source that charges supercapacitors as well as provides power to the loads as required. During charging, the supercapacitors are connected in parallel, but they are switched to series connection by relays at the moment that the loads demand large currents. No other controlling means except for relays in the circuit is employed, so that the electric arrangement is simple, reliable, and cost-effective. As the batteries are designed to deliver currents at low discharge rates, the effective use-time of batteries is prolonged. Furthermore, due to the high power densities of supercapacitors, the readily available alkaline batteries can be utilized in the power unit for electric power tools.

A power supply control system for use with a tissue stimulating prosthesis, such as a cochlear implant. The power supply control system comprises a first battery (31), a second battery (32), at least a third battery (33), and a switching system (36). The firstand second batteries (31,32) are electrically connected in series to provide power to the prosthesis, while the third battery (33)is electrically connectable through the switching means (36) in parallel with either the first battery (32). The third battery (33) is electrically connected by the control system in parallel with whichever one of said first battery (31) or said second battery(32) has lowest voltage.

A plurality of battery pack blocks (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, 1e, 1f) connected in series-parallel have their operation states monitored by battery ECUs (2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e, 2f), respectively based on detected voltage, current, and temperature. Detection outputs by current sensors (5) provided at the charge/discharge circuits of the battery pack blocks are added up for the parallel-connected battery pack blocks in an analog data state before A/D conversion, so that the total charge/discharge current in the battery power source device is obtained.

An electric device comprises a plurality of detachable battery units (2, 3, 4), each consisting of a set of storage batteries (28, 3B, 4B) and storage means (11, 12, 13) storing information about the charge and discharge states of the batteries. Connection means is provided to connect and disconnect an electric device (1) electrically in response to each battery unit being attached or detached. The device includes drive means (9) for driving load, charger means (5) for charging the storage batteries (2B, 3B, 4B) by referring to the information stored in the storage means (11, 12, 13) of the mounted battery units (2, 3, 4), and control means (6) for controlling the power supplied from the individual battery units (2, 3, 4) to the drive means (9) by referring to the above-mentioned information.

A portable computer main body (10) includes a power source circuit section (46) having a battery pack. A plurality of auxiliary battery units (16-1, 16-2) are mechanically connected and fixed to a casing of the computer main body and are electrically connected in series to a power source input terminal (48) of the main body (10). A charge/discharge control section (52-1, 52-2) is provided for each of the auxiliary battery units (16-1, 16-2). During charging, the charge/discharge control sections cooperate to charge the auxiliary battery units sequentially starting from the auxiliary battery unit (16-1) located nearest to the computer main body (10). On the contrary, during discharging (use of the computer) the charge/discharge control sections cooperate to discharge the auxiliary battery units sequentially starting from the auxiliary battery unit (16-2) which is furthest from the computer main body. There is also another system construction having a single auxiliary battery.

A portable phone has an internal battery and an external battery pack is releasably attachable to the phone. A control unit in the phone controls connection of the respective batteries to a phone power input, depending on the detection of the external battery voltage. Whenever an external battery is present with a voltage above a predetermined minimum value, the external battery will be connected to the phone power input to provide power to operate the phone, so that the internal battery lifetime is extended. When the external battery voltage falls below the minimum value, or the external battery is removed, the unit automatically switches to internal battery power, so that the external battery can be changed without interrupting power supply to the phone, if the phone is on or during a call.

A control device (7) located in battery operated device or battery pack is used to control charging and discharging cycles of a pair of rechargeable batteries (6a, 6b). The device determines which of the batteries is least charged and, if not already fully discharged, allows power to be drawn from the battery until it becomes fully discharged. The device then allows the other battery to be drained. When the batteries are placed in a charger (3), the control device only allows fully discharged batteries to be charged. In this way, only full discharge and charge cycles are performed, which maximises the lifetime of the batteries.

A wireless communicator, such as a cellular telephone or personal communicator, includes a power source (26) (e.g., two series connected batteries (B1, B2)) providing output voltages VSS, VDD, and V1, where V1=(VDD-VSS)/2. The power source (26) is coupled to a first load (14) for powering the first load with VSS and VDD. The wireless communicator further includes a power source switching unit (S1, S2) having first inputs coupled to VSS, VDD and V1, a second input coupled to a MODE signal, and outputs coupled to a second load (14a, 16a). The power source switching unit is responsive to a first state of the MODE signal for powering the second load with VSS and V1, and is responsive to a second state of the MODE signal for powering the second load with V1 and VDD. By periodically toggling the MODE signal, such as at a frame rate of the wireless communicator, the power drawn from each battery (B1, B2) by the second load is equalized, while providing the second load with a desired lower operating voltage. Also shown is interface circuitry (26a) for level shifting signals output from the first load to the second load, and signals output from the second load to the first load. The interface circuitry is also responsive to the state of the MODE signal for accommodating the changes in levels of the second load input/output signals between VSS-V1, and V1-VDD.
