There is disclosed a plugged honeycomb structure 1 having: partition walls 2 arranged in such a manner as to form a plurality of cells 3 extending from one end face 42 to the other end face 44 through an axial direction; an outer peripheral wall 7 which surrounds an outer periphery of the partition wall 2; and plugging portions 4a, 4b disposed in such a manner as to plug the cell 3 in either end face 42, 44. In the plugged honeycomb structure 1, at least some of plugging portions 4a arranged in at least the vicinity of the outer peripheral wall protrude from the end face 42 or 44. Alternatively, there are provided a plugged honeycomb structure 1 in which a tip of the protruding portion 4a is substantially flat or has a moderate curved face, and a method of manufacturing the structure. The plugged honeycomb structure 1 does not easily break, is capable of enhancing durability, and is preferably usable in a filter such as a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

A method of manufacturing a ceramic honeycomb structural body, comprising the steps of stamping a sheet on both end faces of a ceramic honeycomb body having a plurality of cells and formed in a honeycomb shape, drilling holes in the sheet at positions corresponding to the opening parts of the cells, filling, through the holes, sealing slurry into the opening parts of the cells at both end faces of the ceramic honeycomb body, baking the ceramic honeycomb body, and alternately sealing the opening parts of the cells, characterized by comprising the steps of forming the ceramic honeycomb body in a shape having at least one reference cell different in the shape of the opening parts at the end faces from the other cells, and drilling the holes in the sheet at the positions corresponding to the opening parts of the reference cells and the other cells with the reference cells taken as reference points, whereby the ceramic honeycomb structural body thus obtained can be manufactured at a low cost since the sealed up cells can be easily discriminated and the holes can be easily positioned in the drilling step.

The process for decorating ceramic slabs or tiles comprises: application of a first layer of powders (3) on a mobile conveyor plane (1); the powders (3) being raw materials destined for press-forming and firing to produce a ceramic slab or a tile; possible application of a second layer of powders (5) on the first layer of powders (3). During firing the second layer of powders (5) reacts with subsequently-applied colouring substances applied according to predetermined patterns. A slight compacting of the powders is performed by pressing, if considered necessary, before application, in predetermined patterns, and by means of ink-jet systems, of colouring liquids which will react, during firing, with at least the powders of the second layer of powders (5) in order to colour the second layer of powders (5). A final pressing is then performed.

The present invention provides a method for manufacturing a honeycomb structure, the method including steps of: forming, by extrusion, a formed body 1 having an outer wall, partition walls provided inside the outer wall, and cells each surrounded by the partition walls as well as extending to an axial direction of the body; and drying the formed body 1. The method for manufacturing the honeycomb structure is characterized in that the forming step includes receiving the formed body on a cradle 10 which receives the formed body so that an angle of a face 7a of the outer wall on the cradle 10 relative to the horizontal plane is 15 to 35 degrees, a cradle which has a V-shaped cross section with a cut at an apex of the V shape and which receives the formed body so that the angle relative to the horizontal plane is 15 to 45 degrees, or a cradle which receives one face of the formed body and characterized in that the drying step includes drying the formed body 1 in a state of being received on the cradle 10 having the predetermined angle. The method for manufacturing the honeycomb structure reduces distortion and deformation of the honeycomb structure.

The present invention describes an extrusion process for manufacturing a titanium-containing silicate glass honeycomb structure (100), having a variety of shapes and sizes depending on its ultimate application. The titanium-containing glass honeycomb has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and the CTE can be varied by adjusting the titanium level to match the CTE of members that are bonded to the honeycomb. Furthermore, the inventive honeycomb structure is lightweight, yet able to advantageously used as a light-weight support for such objects as mirrors. Especially extraterrestrial environments where temperature extremes are present. These honeycombs can be used singularly or in aggregates to provide such support. Embodiments are described wherein the mass of the honeycomb is further reduced by removing select portions of the honeycomb without deleteriously impacting its ability for load bearing.

There are disclosed a method for plugging a cell of a honeycomb structure and a method for manufacturing a honeycomb plugged structure. By the methods, plug portion having arbitrary depth and/or shape can exactly and relatively easily be formed. There is disclosed the method for plugging cell 3 of a honeycomb structure 1 having a plurality of cells surrounded by partition walls and extending through an axial direction. In the method for plugging the cells of the honeycomb structure, plugging member 6 molded in predetermined shape is inserted into the cell 3, and the plugging member 6 is bonded to the peripheral partition walls 3 to form plug portions. There is also provided the method for manufacturing the honeycomb plugged structure, including the steps of: plugging at least a certain cells of the honeycomb structure by this plugging method.
