This invention relates to a method for purifying dnd drying a polymer hydrogel. This invention is based in part upon the discovery that rapid drying of polymer hydrogels can eliminate the problem of unacceptable levels of soluble oligomers caused by prolonged thermal treatment. Rapid drying techniques allow drying hydrogels containing more water than was previously considered possible without a loss in product quality. Furthermore, it was discovered that slurries comprising polymer hydrogels and large quantities of water can be spray dried and that spray drying can be conducted with only minimal oligomer formation.

It is an object of the present invention, in the case of an apparatus in which a liquid containing matter having a lower boiling point than the liquid is made to flow down along external surfaces of guides, during which time the low boiling point matter is evaporated, to provide a specific apparatus that can be operated stably for a prolonged period of time on an industrial scale such that not less than 1 ton / hr of the liquid is produced through the evaporation, and furthermore to provide a specific industrial evaporation apparatus according to which there are no problems due to degeneration caused by some of the liquid residing in the apparatus for a prolonged period of time. A process for producing a butene oligomer which comprises: polymerizing a butane/butene mixture fraction in the presence of an acid catalyst to yield oligomers; and then either (1) fractionating the oligomers by distillation to obtain a desired fraction and subjecting the fraction to hydrogenation and then deodorizing treatment or (2) hydrogenating the oligomers, subsequently fractionating the oligomers by distillation to obtain a desired fraction, and deodorizing the fraction. By this process, a butene oligomer which is odorless and has excellent oxidative stability can be produced.

Method for reducing the level of residual organic solvent in a carbomer comprising exposing a carbomer containing residual organic solvent to a gaseous fluid in which said residual organic solvent is substantially soluble and under conditions sufficient to extract at least some of the residual organic solvent from the carbomer; carbomers treated by this method and pharmaceutical suspensions containing the treated carbomer and a therapeutically active agent. This method is effective for the reduction of residual organic solvent in carbomer down to the ppm level, e.g., less than 30 ppm, preferably less than 10 ppm, more preferably less than 2 ppm of residual organic solvent.
