One or more position control apparatus (55) are connected to the positioning actuators (45) so that an operator of the vehicle can activate the positioning actuators (45) to adjust the position of the control pedals (27, 28, 65). Pedal driven components (63) such as pedal position sensors (91) and hydraulic master cylinders (94) are flexibly linked to the systems of the vehicle (12) so that the control pedals (27, 28, 65) remain functional regardless of the position to which the operator has adjusted them.

When connected to the diagnostic connector, the processor (119) mines data off of the data bus (18) and converts it into human readable form on the display (121). This may take the form of mock conventional gauges (124), mock warning lights (105), mock switch status (123), or mock LCD displays (126) shown via computer graphics on the processor's display (121).

The number of states of the power distribution system exceeds in number the number of positions of the state transition initiator. The control system enables the state transition initiator to emulate a four position rotary ignition switch, provides for interaction with fail safe power cutoff switches and provides high voltage switching device protection during instances of control system low voltage conditions.

A motor vehicle electrical power system provides monitoring of the connection between a vehicle battery and a direct current power source for charging the battery. A voltage transient detector determines if voltage levels on the connection between the vehicle battery and the direct current power supply exceed a minimum threshold. Additionally, a timer or low pass filter passes only voltage transients of a minimum duration. Responsive to detection of a voltage transient exceeding the minimum threshold and duration a load dump event is signaled indicating a possible transient interruption of the connection between the vehicle battery and the direct current power source has occurred.

A software algorithm (FIG. 3) determines the strategy by which a controller (34) will manage state of charge (SOC) of a battery pack (32) in a hybrid electric vehicle but always gives the driver the opportunity to make his/her own selection instead. The algorithm causes one of two strategies to be selected each time that the ignition switch is operated from “off” position to “on” position. The manner in which the algorithm executes depends on the value of a calibratable parameter electronically programmed into the controller of the particular vehicle when the vehicle is being built at the factory.
