The apparatus comprises at least one partition wall (4) dividing the receptacle into spaces in such a way that the supension may flow between the spaces at the lower portion and the upper portion of the partition wall, respectively. The air feeding means are positioned to feed air into one aeration space (5a), whereby the air separates impurities from the suspension and makes the suspension flow on different sides of the partition wall (4) upwards and downwards, respectively, so that a spiral flow is created around the partition wall from the inlet channel (2) into the outlet channel (3).

A process for separating printing ink from recycled paper fiber (20) includes the steps of repulping recycled paper furnish with water in a rotary mixer (10) for about 5 minutes at a consistency of 6 % to 18 % with a mixing element (16) having a top speed no greater than 2,000 ft/min. This first stage repulping and mixing is followed by a second mixing stage of 20 to 45 minutes with a mixing element tip speed 2,500 to 4,000 ft/min. Agglomerated contamination particles in the resulting slurry are removed by centrifugal cleaning and slot screening (18).

An improved process for the separation of cellulosic fiber from difficult to process coated and inked paper products is disclosed and claimed. This process readily separates the paper pulp fraction substantially free of contaminants from such waste paper products as single and two side polymeric coated board having wet strength resin, single and two side polymeric coated board having no wet strength resin, single and two-sided glossy printer trimmings, ultraviolet (UV) cured ink coated stocks, and mixtures thereof. Preferred embodiments include a process in an inclined pressure vessel equipped with agitating and rotating means operative to reflux the waste material with respect to the inclined axis of the vessel in the presence of steam and chemical aids for a sufficient period of time so as to bring about repulping and separation of the paper fiber fraction and formation of a contaminant-collecting polymer phase. The recovered paper pulp fraction is suitable as a feedstock in the manufacture of a variety of paper products including paper tissue and paper towel products.

An improved process is disclosed for deinking waste paper which contains laser, electrostatic, and other non-impact printing toners/inks to produce high quality (high brightness, little to no dirt content) pulp with little or no fiber loss. The process involves attachment of ink particles in the waste paper pulp to a magnetic carrier material with the help of an agglomeration agent followed by removal of the attached ink particles by magnetic separation. The magnetic treatment preferably is conducted at ambient or greater temperature, at neutral to alkaline pH, and at a low pulp consistency. Agglomeration and magnetite addition, followed by exposure of the repulped waste paper to a magnetic field provides near complete ink removal over exposure to the magnetic field without such pretreatment. Also, the process may be employed as an additional step in a conventional process for removing inks from reprographic printed papers, such as ink removal by screening, flotation, centrifugal cleaning, washing, and sedimentation with or without decantation.
