The first invention aims to provide a method for preparing stiffer bulky pulp at a freeness level comparable to that obtained by mechanical treatments to improve the bulkiness of product paper by searching for a method capable of adjusting freeness while suppressing damage to pulp fibers and internal fibrillation in a process for producing pulp. The second invention aims to strip contaminants deposited on pulp fibers and/or inorganic particles to reduce adhesion of the contaminants and decrease microorganisms in a treatment of process water containing long pulp fiber fractions used in a process for producing pulp and paper, thereby clarifying process water and thus preparing high-quality pulp and paper. According to the first invention, cavitation is generated in a pulp suspension preferably by a liquid jet and the resulting fine bubbles are introduced into the pulp suspension to adjust the pulp suspension to a desired freeness by means of the impact force induced by collapse of the fine bubbles in a process for producing pulp. According to the second invention, process water containing 50% by weight or less, based on total solids, of long pulp fiber fractions used in a process for producing pulp and/or paper is treated by cavitation generated by a liquid jet and then returned to the process for producing pulp and/or paper and reused.

In a first invention, there is provided a method for preventing damage to pulp fibers and internal fibrillation in a pulp production process to regulate the freeness, whereby, on the same freeness level as mechanical treatment, more stiff and bulky pulp can be produced and the bulky level of paper as the product can be improved. In a second invention, in the treatment of process water containing long fibers of a pulp used in the production process of pulp and paper, contaminants adhered onto pulp fibers and/or inorganic particles are separated, and the stickiness of the contaminants is lowered, and microorganisms are reduced, whereby the process water is clarified, resulting in the production of high-quality pulp and paper. In the first invention, in the production process of pulp, cavitation is allowed to occur in a pulp suspension preferably by liquid jet flow. Fine bubbles produced by cavitation are introduced into the pulp suspension, and the pulp is regulated to a desired freeness by taking advantage of impact power created upon the collapse of the fine bubbles. In the second invention, process water in which the content of long fibers in pulp used in the production process of pulp and/or paper is not more than 50% by weight based on the total solid content, is treated by cavitation generated by liquid jet flow and is then returned to the production process of pulp and/or paper for reutilization.

A process for separating a fibre suspension wherein undesired impurities, such as printing ink and other contaminating substances, are separated from the fibres in a flotation tank and the fibre suspension in admixture with gas is introduced into the tank via directed jets having a high inlet velocity. The tank has inlet openings for the mixture of suspension advantageously located at or close to the bottom of the tank and the jets of suspension are directed upwards, towards the free surface of the suspension in the flotation tank.

There is disclosed a method for recovering fiber from printed wastepaper by loading the wastepaper and water into a continuous batch fiber recovery apparatus. The wastepaper and water are agitated within the apparatus to form a pulp fiber slurry while introducing a deinking/agglomerating composition at predetermined time intervals to cause the ink particles associated with the printed wastepaper to separate from the paper and agglomerate to form large ink particles. The agglomerated ink particles are then removed from the pulp fiber slurry using separation techniques.
