An aspect of the disclosure provides for an apparatus for isolation or enrichment of biological agents from a sample comprising: a sample container comprising an inner volume to hold a sample and a plurality of micro bubbles, a tapered end and an open end, a plunger inserted into the open end and a tip of the tapered end forming an acute angle relative to the horizontal axis of the sample container, wherein the plurality of micro bubbles float one or more biological agents of the sample and wherein the plunger moves towards the tip to isolate or enrich the one or more biological agents from the sample.

Separation of target material from a liquid sample is achieved by coupling the target to targetable encapsulated gas microbubbles, allowing the microbubbles and coupled target to float to the surface of the sample to form a floating microbubble/target layer, and separating this layer from the sample. In a positive separation process the microbubbles are then removed from the target, e.g. by bursting. In a negative separation process target-free sample material is recovered following separation of the floating layer. The method may also be used diagnostically to detect the presence of a disease marker in a sample. Novel separation apparatus is also described.

A process for separating a fibre suspension wherein undesired impurities, such as printing ink and other contaminating substances, are separated from the fibres in a flotation tank and the fibre suspension in admixture with gas is introduced into the tank via directed jets having a high inlet velocity. The tank has inlet openings for the mixture of suspension advantageously located at or close to the bottom of the tank and the jets of suspension are directed upwards, towards the free surface of the suspension in the flotation tank.
