An application management method and a terminal are disclosed. The method includes: acquiring a list of applications needing to retain background data in a terminal; and when it is determined that a first application running in the terminal is not in the list of the applications needing to retain the background data, suspending a first timer corresponding to the first application running. In embodiments of the present invention, timers of applications that do not need to retain background data in the terminal can be suspended. Because the timers stop to be run temporarily, the timers do not wake up the terminal from a dormant state, and correspondingly, the applications do not need to interact with a server end to update the background data, thereby reducing the number of times of waking up the terminal from a dormant state, saving electricity consumption and data traffic of the terminal, and prolonging the standby time of the terminal correspondingly.

Embodiments enable geofencing applications and beacon watch lists. A computing device with at least a first processor and a second processor identifies a set of beacons associated with a geofence. The first processor consumes less power when operating than the second processor. The first processor is provided with the identified set of beacons. In beacon watch list embodiments, the first processor detects one or more beacons proximate to the computing device, compares the detected beacons with the provided set of beacons to determine whether the computing device is within the geofence, and updates a location status based on the comparison. In tiered geofencing implementations, the computing device switches among positioning modalities based on a distance from the computing device to the geofence to save power.

The method includes: installing, on a server, a service application same as that of a mobile terminal; running the service application on the server, and executing, in place of the mobile terminal, a service corresponding to the service application; determining, by the server according to a result of executing the service, whether the mobile terminal needs to be woken up; and when the service needs to wake up the mobile terminal, instructing, by the server, the mobile terminal to process the service. The server executes a service in place of a mobile terminal, and when the mobile terminal needs to be woken up, instructs the mobile terminal to process the service, thereby reducing the power consumption of the mobile terminal, and extending the standby time and service life of the mobile terminal.

Information about application content that will be broadcast is broadcast in application metadata messages. Receiver devices may receive such application metadata messages in a broadcast receiver client which passes the information to the application. The application may inform the broadcast receiver client of particular application content or filtering attributes to use in selecting application content to be received. The broadcast receiver client receives the indicated application content at the designated broadcast time and passes the received content to the application for processing. In an embodiment the application is a Mobile Billboard Advertising (MobAd) application, the application metadata includes attributes about ad content and the broadcast application content includes ad content.

Systems and methods for mobile application traffic optimization are disclosed. In one aspect, embodiments of the present disclosure include a distributed proxy and cache system, including, a local proxy on a mobile device for intercepting a data request made via a mobile device, and a proxy server coupled to the mobile device and a content server to which the data request is directed. In one embodiment, the local proxy can forward the data request to the proxy server for transmission to the content server for a response to the data request. In addition, the proxy server sends the data request to the content server independent of activities on the local proxy and notifies the local proxy when changed or different content on the content server is detected for the data request. One embodiment of the distributed proxy and cache system further includes a cache shared between the local proxy and the proxy server and the component on the local proxy and is queried for a locally stored response to the data request prior to the data request being forwarded on to the proxy server.

A server-side wake service is provided that is operable to allow applications to subscribe to the wake service. The wake service receives a wake request directed to a particular computing device from a particular one of the applications. When the client-side communication service on the particular computing device receives the wake request while in a reduced power mode, the computing device wakes up and an appropriate response is determined.
