An improved spectrally sensitized ultrathin tabular grain emulsion is disclosed in which tabular grains (a) having ä111ü major faces, (b) containing greater than 50 mole percent bromide, based on silver, (c) accounting for greater than 70 percent of total grain projected area, (d) exhibiting an average equivalent circular diameter of at least 0.7 mu m, and (e) exhibiting an average thickness of less than 0.07 mu m, show an enhanced capability for chemical sensitization by reason of employing an oxidized cationic starch as a peptizer. A photographic element is disclosed comprised of a support, a first silver halide emulsion layer coated on the support and sensitized to produce a photographic record when exposed to specular light within the minus blue visible wavelength region of from 500 to 700 nm, a second silver halide emulsion layer capable of producing a second photographic record coated over the first silver halide emulsion layer to receive specular minus blue light intended for the exposure of the first silver halide emulsion layer, the second silver halide emulsion layer being capable of acting as a transmission medium for the delivery of at least a portion of the minus blue light intended for the exposure of the first silver halide emulsion layer in the form of specular light, wherein the second silver halide emulsion layer is comprised of the improved spectrally sensitized ultrathin tabular grain emulsion of the invention.

A method for processing a silver halide photographic material. The method comprises the steps of (1) developing, fixing and washing a photographic light-sensitive material which comprises a support and a photographic layer including a silver halide emulsion layer being provided on the support in which the outermost surface of the photographic layer has a matting degree of 0 to 150 mmHg and the silver halide emulsion layer contains colloidal silica particles, (2) drying the silver halide photographic light-sensitive material by contacting with a heat conductive member having a surface temperature of 90°C to 150°C which installed in a drying zone of the automatic processing machine. In the above method, the photographic light-sensitive material has a moisture content of 3 g/m² to 6.5 g/m² at the point just before of the drying zone and the total time from start of the developing process to finish of the drying process is within the range of more than 15 seconds to less than 45 seconds.

precipitating silver bromide or silver bromoiodide by means of the double-jet or triple-jet technique in colloidal silica having a particle size from 0.003 µm to 0.30 µm as a protective colloid in the absence of any polymeric compound(s) comprising gelatin or its derivatives capable of forming hydrogen bridges with colloidal silica, except for polythioether compounds, but always in the presence of an onium compound, except for an ammonium compound, wherein the ratio by weight of said colloidal silica to the said onium compound(s) is between 3 and 30, and, optionally, in the presence of a crystal growth modifier, controlling the nucleation and growth steps by means of variable flow rate(s) of the aqueous solutions of silver nitrate and halide salts and/or by means of constant pAg-values during the said steps in the vessel in order to determine the number of nuclei quantitatively in the nucleation step and to avoid renucleation in the growth step, desalting the reaction medium and redispersing the silver halide, chemically ripening the silver halide crystals and adjusting the ratio by weight of the colloidal silica sol to the amount of silver halide, expressed as the equivalent amount of silver nitrate to a value of at least 0.03 at every moment throughout the precipitation stage.
