摘要: Disclosed is an improved casting tip (14) for a nozzle of a continuous caster, the tip designed for transferring molten metal (4) from a molten metal reservoir (2) to a continuously advancing mold as formed, for example, by twin belts (18), rolls (24) or block casters (28) for casting molten metal into solid form (22). The casting tip (14) is comprised of a top wall (44), a bottom wall (46) oppositely disposed from the top wall, a first side wall, and a second side wall oppositely disposed from the first side wall, the first and second side walls joined to the top and bottom walls to form a passage therebetween having an entrance and an exit. The passage has a top wall inside surface (52) having a first portion (56) that first converges towards the bottom wall starting at the entrance and has a second portion (60) that diverges from the bottom wall to the exit, the top wall first portion having a length less than the top wall second portion length. Further, the passage has a bottom wall inside surface (54) having a first portion (58) that first converges towards the top wall starting at the entrance and has a second portion (62) that diverges from the top wall to the exit, the bottom wall first portion having a length less than the bottom wall second portion length. The top wall and bottom wall converge and diverge about substantially an equal amount from a center line from the entrance to the exit of the passage.

摘要: A method and system of heating a body of molten aluminum, for example, contained in a heating bay, the method comprising providing a body of molten aluminum (200); projecting an electric powered heater (10) into the body of molten aluminum (200) passing electric current through the element (14) and adding heat to the body of molten aluminum (200). The heater (10) is comprised of a sleeve (12) suitable for immersing in the molten aluminum. The sleeve (12) may have a closed end (32) and is comprised of a composed material comprised of an inner layer (30) of titanium or titanium alloy having an outside surface having a refractory coating (34) thereon exposed to the molten aluminum, the refractory coating (34) resistant to attack by the molten aluminum. An electric heating element (14) is located in the sleeve (12) in heat transfer relationship therewith for adding heat to the molten aluminum.

摘要: There is provided an improved method for dispersing a treatment media in a body of molten metal using an impeller to disperse the media in the body of molten metal, the method producing increased shear forces in the body of molten metal and reducing vortex formation. The method comprises the steps of providing a body of molten metal and an impeller on a shaft in the body. A treatment media is added to the body and dispersed by rotating said impeller in one direction and thereafter reversing the direction of rotation of the impeller to a counter direction. The direction of rotation of the impeller is reversed periodically to substantially reduce formation of a vortex around the shaft of the impeller and to provide increased shear forces in the body for purposes of improving treatment of the molten metal by improved dispersion of the media therein.
