The invention relates to a method for testing a body with brittle material behavior, in particular a ceramic body, for usability, wherein the body is subjected at least in sections to a thermal shock treatment by cooling or heating from a first temperature (T1) to a second temperature (T2) and cracks which are present are detected, after which the usability of the body is decided based on the cracks detected. In order to enable a 100% check of bodies with high reliability, according to the invention a minimal temperature difference between the first temperature (T1) and the second temperature (T2) is determined for the thermal shock treatment based on a required breaking strength of the body in use.
