A mechanism for converting oscillatory rotation of an input shaft (24) to uni-directional rotation of an output shaft (26) has the input shaft (24) journalled to a frame (32) and rotatable about an input axis, over a range of rotational positions, between a forward limit and a reverse limit. An output shaft (26) is journalled to the frame (32) and rotatable about an output axis, which is normal to the input axis. Three bevel gears (60, 62, 64) are employed, namely a first gear (60) coupled to the input shaft (24), a second gear (62) coupled to the input shaft (24) and spaced axially from the first gear (60), and a third gear (64) coupled to the output shaft (26). The bevel teeth (70, 72, 74) of the three gears (60, 62, 64) are arranged in peripheral arrays covering cover less than one half of the entire periphery of each gear (60, 62, 64), so that the bevel teeth (74) of the third gear (64) inter-mesh only with the bevel teeth (70) of the first gear (60) whenever the input shaft rotates from the forward limit toward the reverse limit, and so that the bevel teeth (74) of the third gear (64) inter-mesh only with the bevel teeth (72) of the second gear (62) whenever the input shaft (24) rotates from the reverse limit toward the forward limit.

For a strapping machine, a mechanism is disclosed for mounting a movable chute to a fixed wall (12) and for biasing the chute toward the wall while permitting the chute to move away from the wall so as to allow a strap to be pulled from the chute. The mechanism comprises a wall-mounted bracket (20), a chute-mounted bracket (22), and a pivot arm (24) having an end portion (28) connected pivotally to the wall-mounted bracket, an end portion (32) connected pivotally to the chute-mounted bracket, and an intermediate portion, to which a coiled spring (26) is connected at one end so as to bias the chute toward the wall but so as to permit the chute to move away from the wall. The coiled spring is connected at its other end to the first bracket and extends between the brackets.

A novel method and apparatus are provided for making an improved welded joint between overlapping lengths of thermoplastic strap (U,L). The welded joint includes a central region and an adjacent peripheral region. The pressure on the strap joint during formation is released first in the peripheral region and subsequently in the central region. An embodiment of the apparatus for making such a joint includes an anvil (32), a central strap-engaging member (96), a peripheral strap engaging member (80), and a mechanism for moving the anvil sequentially to three positions. At a first position the overlapping strap lengths are pressed between the anvil and both the central and peripheral strap-engaging members. In the second position of the anvil the peripheral strap-engaging member does not press against the strap lengths while the central strap-engaging member continues to press the strap lengths against the anvil. In the third position of the anvil the anvil and strap-engaging members are sufficiently spaced apart to release all of the pressure on the strap lengths.

An apparatus and method for producing an oriented plastic strap having a predetermined desired thickness for use in strapping packages and the like is passed between a pair of cylinders or rollers placed closely together at a desired nip for reducing the thickness of the sheet. One roller is rotated at a faster lineal rate of speed than the other, and the rollers rotate in opposite directions. This apparatus and method achieves milling and stretching of the material simultaneously substantially at the nip.

A method and apparatus are provided for applying a fold-over seal (S2) about overlapping lengths of strap (L,U). The open seal (52) is positioned with the strap lengths (L,U) between its legs (LG2). Opposing jaws (40) are pivoted about axes (42) against the open seal legs (LG1,LG2) toward the strap lengths (L,U) to bend the seal legs (LG2) inwardly while decreasing the distance between the seal crown (C2) and the pivot axes (42) of the jaws (40). The decrease in the distance between the jaw pivot axes and the seal is limited at a predetermined minimum distance, but the jaws continue to be pivoted to fold the seal legs (LG2) adjacent the strap lengths (L,U). As the jaws approach the fully closed position, the distance between the seal crown (C2) and the jaw pivot axes (42) is increased, and this forces the seal crown (C2) and legs (LG2) closer together to complete crimping of the seal.
