Said modulator can be regulated between two states by means of a control signal (54). In the first state, a minimum proportion of the light bundle (12) leaves an exit of the modulator and in the second state a maximum proportion of the light bundle leaves said modulator. According to the invention, the device (14) has two or more modulators (50, 50', 50'') arranged in a series, so that each light bundle leaving one of the modulators (50, 50') is guided into the entrance of one of the next modulators arranged in the direction of light propagation. After the intensity of the light bundle (16) has been modulated by the device, said light bundle can be removed from the last of the series of modulators (50) arranged in this way in such a manner that the extinction of the device (14) in relation to each of the individual modulators (50) is improved.

The invention relates to a process and a device for detecting physical, chemical, biological or biochemical reactions and interactions on plate-like sample carriers with a biochemical or chemical function, on the basis of spectral reflection after the samples (11) have been exposed to light of different wavelengths. It is intended to determine parameters on the properties of the samples (11) with ease, in a very precise manner and with a high degree of parallelisation of the measurements. According to the process, the samples (11) are arranged on a substrate plate (12) with a carrier layer of a support plate (13) and are exposed to rays of light. The process has the following steps: a laminar arrangement of samples (11) to be analysed undergoes illumination, with temporary resolution, with light of different wavelengths of a variable light source (1) or a scanning monochromator (3) which is arranged downstream of a polychromatic light source (1); the ray portion reflected on at least one boundary surface of each sample (11) or the ray portions or interferences interfering and reflected on peripheries of each samples (11) positioned downstream of one another towards the light is displayed by optical elements on a laminar detector array (8) with high-sensitive resolution or a video camera; the wavelengths of the reflected ray intensities caused by the samples (11) or the intensities of the displayed interferences are selectively detected, a wavelength spectrum associated with each sample is determined, and parameters are derived which characterise the interactions and reactions to be analysed.
