摘要: An optical backplane is formed by defining channels (grooves) in the plane of a polyimide layer (55), laying optical fibres (56,57) in each channels, retaining the fibres (56,57) using an adhesive and bonding an epoxy resin layer (58) to the polyimide layer (55) to form a flexible structure (54). The flexible structure (54) is made rigid by bonding epoxy glass FR4 layers (60,61) to either side of the flexible structure (54). A flexible ribbon (53) with an optical fibre (57) contained therein is formed as an integral portion of the flexible structure (54) using spacers (59,62) to define a ribbon region and to aid removal of the rigid layers (60,61) in the ribbon region.

摘要: A helmet mounted display system comprising an eyepiece (3) through which a wearer of the helmet directly views a forward scene (13). The eyepiece also serves to combine an intensified image of the forward scene with the wearer's direct view of the scene. The intensified image is produced by an optical arrangement including an image intensifier (6) from which light is passed to the eyepiece via a prism means (2). The prism means serves to compensate for orientation of the intensified image in other parts of the optical arrangement so that the intensified image is in the same orientation as the wearer's direct view of the forward scene. In addition the prism means allows the various components in the system light path to conform to the profile of the helmet thereby making the helmet more comfortable for a wearer.

摘要: The relative position (M) of two members (33, 34) is sensed by scanning (S) an optical beam (25) over an encoded pattern (20) carried by one of the members, and by using a read head (21) secured to the other member to receive an optical signal transmitted from the encoded pattern (20). This optical signal is received by an optical position sensor to discriminate from the frequency of the signal, the position of the read head (21) relative to the encoded pattern (20). As the relative position is detected from the frequency of the signal rather than its intensity, components can be replaced without recalibration. The optical beam (25) is scanned by using a light source of variable wavelength which is passed through a device, such as a diffraction grating or a gradient index lens, for deflecting the beam (25) dependent on its wavelength.

摘要: Apparatus for monitoring changes in a physical quantity with time comprises a reader unit (1) and at least one sensor unit (2) containing electronic components (20, 21, 23, 24 and 25) arranged to measure the physical quantity at predetermined time intervals and to store measurement data with corresponding time data. Each sensor unit (2) also contains communication means (26) for transferring the measurement data and the time data from the sensor unit (2) to the reader unit (1), and the sensor unit (2) also contains an inductive coupling means (24) to receive energy from the reader unit (1) to power the communication means (26). Each sensor unit is encapsulated with a food grade plastic and is typically the size of a credit card, thereby providing a small and relatively inexpensive temperature monitoring device for use in the transport and storage of foodstuffs.

摘要: A drop deflection device suitable for use in a drop marking system employs an electret (9). Electrically conductive marking drops (1) such as inks are given an electrical charge. The drops (1) pass between a pair of deflection plates (8, 9) at least one of which is formed by an electret (a dielectric material which has been subjected to corona discharge to create a relatively permanent electrically charged material body). Depending upon the presence or absence of a charge on a particular drop (1), it will be deflected by the field (6) between the plates (8, 9) on to a substrate (11) for marking. If uncharged, the drops (1) continue to a collection device (10) which returns them to the ink reservoir.
