Carpet backing is prepared from carpet scrap by first comminuting the carpet scrap into fragments and then melting and fusing the carpet scrap fragments together to render molten fragments. The resulting molten fragments containing synthetic resins are then formed into agglomerates. The pellets are then ground into a fine powder. A slurry may be prepared from the ground powder and a carrier. The ground powder may, alternatively, be mixed with a polyurethane reactive mixture, aqueous polymer containing emulsion or a thermoplastic composition such as bitumen, polypropylene or polyethylene. The resulting polymeric coating is coated onto a substrate. The coated substrate is then hardened.

A method for preparing poorly water soluble drug particles is disclosed. The method comprises dissolving a drug in at least one organic solvent to form a drug/organic mixture, spraying the drug/organic mixture into an aqueous solution and concurrently evaporating the organic solvent in the presence of the aqueous solution to form an aqueous dispersion of the drug particles. The resulting drug particles are in the nanometer to micrometer size range and show enhanced dissolution rates and reduced crystallinity when compared to the unprocessed drug.

A tubular reactor (1) characterized by having short static mixing elements (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) separated by coalescing zones (20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27) is used to conduct multiphase liquid/liquid reactions. Small droplets of one of the phases are dispersed into the other phase by the static mixing elements (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10). These droplets coalesce and at least partially phase separate as the mixture passes through the subsequent coalescing zone. The tubular reactor is particularly suitable for nitrating organic compounds while forming low levels of improperly nitrated by-products and low levels of nitrophenolics.

According to the present invention, aqueous polyol solutions are sprayed onto polyethylene terephthalate pellets after polycondensation or after the second polycondensation stage, also known as solid state polymerization, or said pellets are produced through extrusion with a polyol content of less than or equal to 25 percent by weight, pelletized, and admixed as a masterbatch with a polyester prior to processing.

This invention pertains to a composition and a process for preparing a closed cell alkenyl aromatic polymer foam having enlarged cell size, comprising one or more alkenyl aromatic polymers, one or more substantially random interpolymers, one or more blowing agents having zero ozone depletion potential and optionally one or more co-blowing agents, and optionally, one or more nucleating agents and optionally, one or more other additives. This combination allows the manufacture of closed cell, low density alkenyl aromatic polymer foams of enlarged cell size, when blowing agents of relatively high nucleation potential are employed. When such blowing agents are used with alkenyl aromatic polymers in the absence of the substantially random interpolymers, small cell foams result.

An aqueous solution of 2,3-Epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride having reduced color and method of preparation are disclosed. 2,3-Epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride is treated with sodium hypochlorite to reduce its color. 2-3-Epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride can be prepared via reaction of trimethylamine and epichlorohydrin. If desired, an aprotic solvent can be used. 2-3-Epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride formed in the resultant slurry, must then be isolated via known methods, such as evaporation, extraction, centrifugation, etc. depending upon the other constituents of the slurry and the residual epichlorohydrin removed. The final product is then treated with an effective amount of sodium hypochlorite. The obtained 2-3-Epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride then is used for, for example, color-sensitive applications such as to produce cationic starch for use in paper manufacture.
