The invention comprises a method. The method comprises applying a quantity of an aqueous dispersion of thermoplastic polymer particles to a primary backing and loop backs of a tufted carpet or a tufted synthetic turf, wherein the thermoplastic particles have an average particle size less than 1,000 microns. The method also comprises heating the aqueous dispersion to a temperature sufficient to remove water therefrom, and heating the thermoplastic particles on the primary backing and loop backs to a temperature at or above the melting temperature of the thermoplastic particles. The method further comprises allowing the heated thermoplastic polymer particles to cool below their melting temperature whereby the loop backs are adhered to the primary backing.

A process for providing a relatively smooth, tough, elastomeric coating over one surface of a fibrous batt employs a heated ironing surface which engages an uncured coating of a composition of cross-linkable elastomeric aqueous emulsion applied as a foam or froth to an exposed surface of a fibrous batt. The heated belt causes dewatering and cure of a film of the coating which is in contact with the ironing surface. The fibrous batt thereafter is heated in a curing oven to drive off substantially all of the moisture and substantially cure all of the elastomeric coating composition. The resulting coated fibrous batt has a smoother and tougher surface than similar batts formed from similar compositions without the interposed ironing treatment. A preferred ironing element comprises a continuous stainless steel belt.

A process for preparing polyurethane carpet backings uses a filled polyurethane-forming composition that contains a mixture of certain metal acetylacetonate and sulfur- containing organotin catalysts. The mixture of catalysts is particularly beneficial in instances where the composition is processed at temperatures of above 30 to about 500C, as long pot life is provided together with a rapid thermally-induced cure.
