Addition of a polyalphaolefin and/or one or more esters such as a diester or polyolester may also be utilized therein. The lubricant may be formulated as a complete engine oil crankcase lubricant, or concentrated into an additive for addition to conventional mineral oil based engine oil, synthetic engine oils, or blends thereof in an effective amount of up to 30 percent volume percent, typically from 20 to 25 percent by volume.

The present invention relates to a monocarboxylic acid based antifreeze coolant formulation for applications such as for gasoline engines which may be used for inhibition and prevention erosion and corrosion of aluminum and the corrosion of other metals exposed to an aqueous liquid in automotive coolant systems. The formulation further inhibits mineral scale. It may be packaged as an ethylene glycol based additive for use in new engines or in a concentrated inhibition package as an additive as for reinhibition of used coolant. The combination of a mixture of ethylene or propylene glycol, a monobasic carboxylic organic acid, azoles, and low levels of molybdates provides corrosion resistance. A heavy duty formula more suited for diesel engines also contains a nitrite salt and/or nitrate salt and a siloxane stabilized silicate, and combinations thereof to provide a synergistic protective effect against the cavitation corrosion of aluminum in aqueous liquids reducing the corrosion rate and is effective at relatively low concentrations varying pH ranges.

The introduction of nanotubes in a liquid provides a means for changing the physical and/or chemical properties of the liquid. Improvements in heat transfer, electrical properties, viscosity, and lubricity can be realized upon dispersion of nanotubes in liquids; however, nanotubes behave like hydrophobic particles and tend to clump together in liquids. Methods of preparing stable dispersions of nanotubes are described and surfactants/dispersants are identified which can disperse carbon nanotubes in aqueous and petroleum liquid medium. The appropriate dispersant is chosen for the carbon nanotube and the water or oil based medium and the dispersant is dissolved into the liquid medium to form a solution. The carbon nanotube is added to the dispersant containing the solution with agitation, ultrasonication, and/or combinations thereof.

The invention detailed herein comprises a family of radiation-curable coating formulations specifically for metal substrates. These coating formulations are based on multifunctional acrylate resins formed by the reaction of acrylate monomers and oligomers with β-keto esters (e.g., acetoacetates), β-diketones (e.g., 2, 4-pentanedione), β-keto amides (e.g., acetoacetanilide, acetoacetamide), and/or other β-dicarbonyl compounds that can participate in the Michael addition reaction. An essential novelty of these coating resins is that they will cure under standard UV-cure conditions without the addition of traditional photoinitiators. Other materials, both reactive (conventional acrylates) and non-reactive (e.g., solvents) may also be incorporated into the resin oligomers to enhance the coatings properties on metal substrates. These materials include a variety of acrylic monomers and oligomers, primary, secondary and tertiary amines, acid-functional monomers and oligomers, silicones, waxes and elastomers, among others. Coatings based on these novel multifunctional acrylate resins exhibit excellent adhesion and shrinkage control, flexibility, solvent resistance, scratch and mar resistance, impact resistance, color, and durability across a wide range of plastic materials. These coatings may be cured via chemical means, thermally, or by exposure to UV or electron beam radiation.

The invention also relates to a method for manufacture of such unsaturated polyester resins and to use thereof in various applications such as gelcoats. The unsaturated polyester resin comprises 20-85 wt.% of at least one unsaturated polyester having a molecular weight of 2000-6000, prepared from 1) 30-70 mol%, preferably 40-60 mol% of at least two unsaturated carboxylic acids or derivatives thereof and at least one of them is an unsaturated aromatic carboxylic acid or a derivative thereof and optionally of one or more carboxylic acids and derivatives thereof, 2) 30-70 mol%, preferably 40-60 mol% of at least two diols and at least one of them is an aliphatic branched diol, preferably 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol and/or 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol and the amount of the aliphatic branched diol/diols is 0.5-8 mol%, preferably 2-6 mol%, 3) 0.5-10 mol%, preferably 2-6 mol% of at least one monoalcohol, 4) optionally a modifying chemical/chemicals and the total amount of monoalcohols and modifying chemicals is 0.5-20 mol%, preferably 1-15 mol%, 5) optionally 0.5-20 mol%, preferably 1-10 mol% of a polyhydric alcohol/alcohols having at least three hydroxyl groups, and 15-50 wt.% of at least one reactive diluent.

Vinyl ester resins processed until low epoxy values are reached, are storage stable for two weeks at 54 DEG C (130 DEG F). Adding a copper salt inhibitor also provides two weeks storage stability at 54 DEG C (130 DEG F). A synergistic effect is observed if both low epoxy values are reached and copper naphthenate inhibitor is used, extending shelf life stability to two months at 54 DEG C (130 DEG F).
