Multiplexed ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), mass spectrometry (MS) such as time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS), or hybrid IM-MS is carried out on a sample, and the resulting measurement data are deconvoluted. A pulse sequence controlling ion pulsing is utilized in conjunction with the multiplexing. The pulse sequence may be modified based on the raw measurement data acquired. A demultiplexing matrix based on the modified pulse sequence is utilized to improve deconvolution.

An apparatus and method for generating a mid-infrared region image of a specimen (16) are disclosed. The apparatus includes a mid-infrared region laser (11) that generates a first light beam (18), and a stage (57) adapted to carry a specimen to be scanned. An optical assembly (31) focuses the first light beam to a point on the specimen. A first light detector (13) measures a first intensity of light leaving the point on the specimen. A stage actuator assembly causes the specimen to move relative to the point in two dimensions. A controller (39) forms a mid-infrared region image from the first intensity. The image can be based on reflected or transmitted light. The maximum size of the imaged area is determined by a scanning assembly that moves in a first direction relative to the stage, the stage moving in a direction orthogonal to the first direction.

The invention provides a multi-inlet sampling device for an ion source. In general, the sampling device contains at least two sample inlet capillaries and a single outlet capillary that are all fluidically connected. A mass spectrometer ion source and a mass spectrometer system containing the multi-inlet sampling device are also provided. The device is readily removed and installed at ambient pressure without venting the mass spectrometer. Also provided by the invention are methods for simultaneously introducing at least two samples into a mass analyzer.
