Further, signals are transmitted to a microprocessor of a meter register (40) to change the rotation of the stepper motor (56) so that the meter register (40) can be used with different types of meters. Still further, a meter generator co-acting with a meter register (40) forwards an electrical pulse signal after a quantity of material or utility passes through a water meter to a microprocessor of a remote reader. The remote reader includes an odometer (58) coupled to a stepper motor (56).

A water meter has a meter register having an encoder having electromagnetic wave emitters, e.g., infrared emitters to measure water flow and direction of water flow through the meter. The encoder has two of three spaced emitters directing infrared rays at predetermined time intervals toward a rotating detector wheel having a reflective surface portion and a non-reflective surface portion facing the emitters and an infrared sensor. The reflective surface portion of the detecting wheel reflects the infrared rays incident thereon toward the sensor. A microprocessor connected to the sensor acts on signals from the sensor to determine material flow. The meter register transmits the signal to a distant receiver. The microprocessor of a meter register has an algorithm to prevent the meter register from sending signals until after the meter register or a water meter having a meter register is installed and water moved through the meter.

A water meter register has a shaft for rotating an energy passing wheel having a high transmission portion and a low transmission portion. Energy rays are directed toward one side of the wheel toward a pair of detectors mounted on the other side of the wheel. Each of the detectors generates a first signal when energy passing through the first wheel portion is incident thereon and a second signal when the energy from the devices is incident on the second wheel portion to determine water volume flow rate. In another embodiment, an electronic device acts on the signals from the detectors to provide an adjusted signal that is a more accurate measure of flow rate. In another embodiment, the register includes a plurality of wheels to display measured volume flow, and a stepper motor mount within the wheels to rotate the wheels to present a readable measured volume flow rate.

An antenna is provided that includes a first electrically conductive sheet, a second electrically conductive sheet, and an axially extending leg electrically connected to the first electrically conductive sheet and the second electrically conductive sheet. A first electrically conductive sheet is spaced an axial distance away from the second electrically conductive sheet wherein at least a portion of the register body is sandwiched between the first electrically conductive sheet and the second electrically conductive sheet. The meter register can be attached to a meter body and, further, an auxiliary antenna can be attached to the meter register. Also disclosed is a method of operation of a utility measuring system that incorporates the above-described meter register.
