    摘要: An air gap manifold joint construction (10) comprises an engine exhaust port flange (12) having a plurality of exhaust port orifices (14), each with an inner orifice wall (16), and a dual wall manifold having a plurality of runners (27) each including an inner tubular liner (30) and an outer tubular jacket (34), the inner tubular liner being generally spaced from the outer tubular jacket substantially over the length of the inner tubular liner to form an air gap. An adapter sleeve (40) extends between an exhaust port orifice and the inlet to one of the runners. The sleeve is fitted inside the inlet with the ends of the jacket and liner of the runner in peripheral engagement therewith. The liner (30) extends slightly further along the sleeve (40) towards the exhaust port orifice than the jacket (34), and the liner, jacket and sleeve are attached to one another by an outer weld seam (42). Towards the outlet end of the manifold, the liner terminates short of the end of the jacket and is slidably engaged therewith.

    摘要: Hydroforming double wall tubular stock (W) into an air gap tubular element comprising providing a plural wall tubular workpiece having at least an inner wall liner (L) and an outer wall jacket (J) having adjacent open axial ends, causing at least one of the jacket ends to extend axially beyond the adjacent liner end and to be flared outwardly, placing the workpiece into a first mold cavity (14) of a size and configuration to result in the desired size and configuration of the liner, sealing the open ends of said liner, injecting hydroforming fluid into said liner to fill it and applying pressure thereto to expand the liner and jacket in the first mold cavity, releasing the pressure, placing the workpiece in a second mold cavity (16) of a size and configuration desired for the jacket on a resulting air gap tubular element, providing hydroforming end closures (42) to seal off the jacket ends, at least one of the end closures having an annular shoulder (42') aligned with the flared extended jacket end radially outwardly offset from the adjacent liner end, pressing the annular shoulder directly against the flared jacket end to seal the flared jacket end between the shoulder and an anvil surface, injecting fluid into the workpiece to fill it and applying pressure to expand only the jacket.

    摘要: In an apparatus and method for hydroforming a dual wall conduit having a controlled size gap between the walls, a frame (11) has an upper crown (11C) and a lower bed (11D) defining a hydroforming space therebetween, the bed (11D) having a slideway extending from the space to a load-unload-preform position out of the space. A mold assembly on the slideway has a lower platen (17) and an upper platen (19) defining at least two hydroforming cavities (14,16), one cavity being an elongated preform and semi-finish cavity (14), and the other cavity being an elongated finish cavity (16). A mold shifting means (15) is positioned for shifting the mold assembly on the slideway from the position in the space between the crown (11C) and bed (11D), to and from the forward and load-unload-preform position. Mold closing and preforming hydraulic cylinders (27) are operably connected to the upper mold platen (19) for closing the upper platen (19) onto the lower platen (17) and creating mechanical preforming on dual wall tubular stock in the preform and semi-finish form cavity (14). The upper crown (11C) has a peripherally retained bladder (33) over the mold assembly for applying a closure clamping force on the mold assembly by the bladder (33). A first pair of double acting, tube sealing, hydroforming elements are at the ends of the preform, semi-finish cavity (14), and a second pair of tube sealing hydroforming elements (40) are at the ends of the finish cavity (16).

    摘要: A vehicle door impact beam assembly comprises a beam (12), each end (12') of which has a convex curvilinear outer surface to form opposite curvilinear, outwardly facing connector surfaces, a steel plate (14, 14') at each end having at least one portion which is generally flat, and having a pair of opposite faces, a pair of elongated beads (20) upstanding from one of these faces of the steel plate, each bead having a convex curvilinear cross section, the beads being spaced from and parallel to each other, defining elongated, adjacent, mutually facing, curvilinear surfaces engaging the opposite curvilinear, outwardly facing surfaces of the tubular impact beam, and each curvilinear bead surface being welded to one of the curvilinear beam surfaces of one of the beam ends. The beads may be formed from the steel plate, each having a radius of curvature smaller than the radius of curvature of the ends of the beam. The mutually facing curvilinear bead surfaces are preferably spaced apart an amount less than the diameter of the beam end.

    摘要: A vehicle door impact beam (2,12) having an elongated tubular body with a central axis (17), the end portions (32,34) of the beam being taper cut to form inner termini (50,54) and outer termini (52,54) and opposite taper surfaces for each end, the included angle at the inner termini being greater than 180 degrees and the outer termini being less than 180 degrees. The end portion taper surfaces are specially configurated so that the moment capacity at all positions along the length thereof is greater than the bending moment at such positions. The first, and preferably the second taper surfaces spiral from the inner terminus to the outer terminus through an angle of about 90 degrees. Preferably, the inner termini (50,54) of the two ends are on opposite sides of the beam, and the outer termini (52,56) of both ends are on the same side of the beam.
