摘要: A track (17) and a vehicle to operate thereon, the track (17) comprising two laterally spaced apart sets of running faces (18, 20) each of which having an upper running face (18) and a lower running face (20), the vehicle having at least one axle assembly (12) with at least a first set of two wheels (6) journalled thereon and engaged with the respective upper running faces (18) and a second set of two wheels (19) journalled thereon and adapted to engage with the respective lower running faces (20), characterised in that the second set of wheels (19) are forced into running engagement with the respective lower running faces (20) by at least one actuating mechanism (21, 24) which varies the force of engagement by means of a sensed signal indicating loss of adhesion or imminent loss of adhesion of the first set of wheels (6) with respect to the upper running faces (18). Also disclosed is an arrangement wherein the first set of wheels (6) are inwardly inclined and mounted on a self steering bogie (7) having a set of freely rotating flanged steering wheels supported from the axle assembly (12) and engaging the upper running faces (20).

摘要: A rack bearing system for supporting a rack (1) in mesh with a pinion (3). The rack (1) can be of "Y" cross-section or it can be cylindrical in shape. Rack (1) is supported by means of pads (12, 13) bearing on inclined surfaces (10, 11) of the rack (1). The pads (12, 13) are supported by means of screws (14, 15) adjustable in the housing (2) and locked by lock nuts (16, 17). Typically one pad (13) will bear on a spherical seat (18) of screw (17) in a manner which allows rocking. Similarly pad (12) will bear on leaf spring (20) which bears on a spherical seat of screw (14). By allowing movement of the rack (1) towards the pinion (3), the leaf spring (20) ensures slack-free engagement between the rack (1) and pinion (3). Alternatively, the pads are provided with convex spherical recesses in the upper ends of the screws. A coil spring is provided within the screws to force the pads into engagement with the rack. Each pad (12, 13) can pivot or tilt when movement or bending of the rack (1) occurs. In the case of the alternative construction the pads can swivel. The pads can be adjusted and so can accommodate manufacturing defects in the rack and so provides substantially uniform contact pressure between the pads and the rack.

摘要: A die for forming a Y-form rack portion (1) of a steering rack bar (25) from a blank by forging in which the die has at least three forming elements (44, 47, 48) relatively movable on application of forging pressure to the die to converge on a blank therein, a first of the forming elements (44) having in it cavities the shape of which corresponds to the shapes of the teeth (8) to be formed, second and third forming elements (47, 48) having forming faces to form longitudinal guide faces (45) on the Y-form rack portion (1) on the side thereof opposite the teeth (8). The three forming elements (44, 47, 48) are shaped and arranged to move together to converge on the blank to transform it into the final form in such a manner as to inhibit escape of the material of the blank between the first (44) and second (47) or first (44) and third (48) forming elements up to substantially the last instant of closure of the die. It is preferred to provide a fourth forming element (30) between the second (47) and third (48) forming elements which serves to guide their movement and to control the shape of a surface of the stem part (14) of the rack portion (1) lying between the longitudinal guide faces (4, 5) and it is further preferred to impart to the second (47) and third (48) forming elements a rolling motion as they converge on the blank. The die is preferably constructed to be used in a single direction impact press. A method of making a steering rack bar (25) having a Y-form rack portion (1) and a cylindrical portion (2) form a blank by forging is provided in which an accurately shaped and substantially cylindrical blank is first produced and the cylindrical portion (2) of the blank is held while the Y-form rack portion (1) is formed in a die of the configuration decribed above.

摘要: A switch for connecting a railway track (1, 1) with a branch railway track (2) the railway track having a discontinuity, switching being effected by a mechanism which moves both ends of the railway track adjacent the discontinuity from a first position in which they align with both ends of a fixed part of the railway track (5, 6) to a second position in which they align with both ends of the branch railway track (7, 8), the movement being effected by causing a section of the railway track (3, 4) adjacent to the discontinuity to flex. In a preferred form of the invention the section of the railway track is lifted and lowered during the switching procedure. The two rails (3, 4) of the flexing section are connected together by ties (20), these ties (20) when moved cause the rails (3, 4) to flex.
