    Abstract: An apparatus and method for manufacturing articles made of polyurethane that includes a mold assembly (12) in communication with a mix chamber (50). The mix chamber (50) is positioned below the mold assembly (12). The mix chamber (50) includes a propeller (102) for mixing the liquid polyurethane chemicals. The mix chamber (50) further includes a pneumatically actuated bladder (110) that causes the mixed chemicals to move from the mix chamber (50) to the mold assembly (12). The chemicals expand to take on the shape of the mold (12). The method of the present invention includes the steps of: (a) selecting polyurethane chemicals having certain specific weights; (b) placing said chemicals in a mix chamber wherein chemicals stratify according to their specific weights to prevent detrimental reaction among the chemicals until final mixing; and (c) allowing the chemicals to expand to form an article.

    Abstract: Un procédé de production d'une mousse polyuréthane à cellules ouvertes prévoit le mélange des constituents suivants dans une zone de mélange à température ambiante: un diisocyanate ayant une fonctionnalité d'au moins environ 2,0, au moins un donneur d'hydrogène, au moins un agent tensio-actif pouvant créer une mousse polyuréthane à cellules ouvertes, au moins un catalyseur, et un agent de gonflage comprenant un gaz dont le point d'ébullition est inférieur à 100oF aux température et pression atmosphériques et contenant de préférence du gaz carbonique. Le mélange peut contenir également de l'eau. Le mélange est soumis à une pression dans ladite zone de mélange qui est suffisante pour maintenir l'agent gonflant à l'état liquide aux températures ambiantes. Après mélange, le produit est évacué de la zone de mélange vers une zone à pression atmosphérique, ce qui permet de vaporiser l'agent gonflant de manière complète et instantanée, et de réaliser ainsi l'expansion du mélange. La mousse ainsi obtenue est polymérisée à température ambiante.

    Abstract: A process for the production of an open cell polyurethane foam comprises the mixing of the following components at ambient temperatures in a mixing zone: a diisocyanate having a functionality of at least about 2.0, at least one hydrogen donor, at least one surfactant which is effective in forming an open cell polyurethane foam, at least one catalyst, and a blowing agent comprising a gas having a boiling point below approximately -100 oF at atmospheric temperature and pressure which preferably comprises carbon dioxide. In addition, the mixture may also optionally contain water. The mixture is subjected to a pressure in said mixing zone which is sufficient to maintain the blowing agent in the liquid state at ambient temperatures. After mixing, the mixture is ejected from the mixing zone to atmospheric pressure, thereby completely and instantaneously vaporizing the blowing agent to provide expansion of the mixture. The resultant foam is then cured at ambient temperatures.
