This invention relates to a nutritional dietary system, formulation, kit and method for use in preparing an individual for a predetermined activity which requires a clean digestive tract, particularly the colon. Such predetermined activities include, but are not limited to, gastrointestinal surgery and colon screenings. Specifically, the present invention provides an individual low amounts of fat, dietary fiber and solid food content to minimize stool formation and/or facilitate removal of stool from the digestive tract prior to the predetermined activity. The present invention also provides the individual with sufficient calories and nutrition to enable the individual to conduct daily, routine activities while utilizing the present invention. In one alternative embodiment, the dietary regimen of the present invention provides a variety of pre-packaged, ready to eat or easy to prepare nutritional liquid or solid foods which, when coordinated with a laxative regimen, result in removal of residue such that a medically and/or diagnostically useful procedure can be performed on the digestive tract.

A syringe device and injector system including a vent for relieving a vacuum within a syringe is provided. Embodiments provide a syringe device including a reservoir having a sidewall. The reservoir includes a dispensing distal end a proximal end. The syringe device also includes a piston in movable sealing engagement with the sidewall. Furthermore, the sidewall defines a vent extending from the proximal end of the reservoir. The vent is configured to interrupt the sealing engagement between the piston and the sidewall so as to allow a gas to enter the reservoir through the proximal aperture and past the piston member as the piston member is moved from the distal end to the proximal end of the tubular aperture.

Embodiments of the invention provide a system and method for using an electro-pneumatic insufflator for magnetic resonance imaging, such as for virtual colonoscopy. Embodiments of the invention further provide a MRI imaging suite and a method for distension of a body part to be imaged. As an alternative to the complete redesign of an electro-magnetic insufflator, embodiments of the current invention utilize a standard electro-pneumatic insufflator that operates in a location impervious to electromagnetic radiation using an electromagnetically inactive connection tube.

A medical imaging system, dispensing system, method, and computer program product for analyzing biological fluid chemistry as part of a medical imaging procedure are provided. The system of the present invention provides a biological fluid analyzer (130) configured to analyze a biological fluid sample for the presence of specific components that indicate patient's ability to safely process and clear injected contrast media from the vasculature that maybe injected as part of the medical imaging procedure. The medical imaging system, dispensing system, and method for analyzing biological fluid chemistry are further provided as part of the medical imaging procedure and/or medical imaging suite (100) so as to be capable of determining in real time, a patient's ability to safely clear injected contrast media.

The invention includes a device, kit, and system capable of manually distending a subject’s body cavity. In one embodiment, the invention includes a distention media reservoir (10), insertable member (20) for insertion into a body cavity, and a manually operated pumping member (12) capable of displacing distention media from the reservoir and into a body cavity. In some embodiments, the distention media reservoir may be air or CO2. In one embodiment, the invention is available in the form of a kit. In another embodiment, the devices include a reusable portion and a consumable portion. The reusable portion may include the media distention reservoir and pumping member, the consumable portion includes the insertable member, and may also include a barrier for preventing effluent from contaminating the reusable. In other embodiments, the device is adapted to function as a distention media booster pump that may be used in conjunction with an electro-pneumatic insufflation system.

In one alternative embodiment, the invention is directed to a graphical user interface having a graph space in which a user may create a graph that may be used to control the injection behavior of a fluid injection device. In some embodiments, the graphical user interface may include a graphical visualization tool having a graph space window for inputting and displaying a desired injection function for a fluid; one or more fluid selector icons that may permit a user to select a fluid; and a location selection icon that may permit a user to navigate within the graph space to create an injection function for a selected fluid. In some embodiments, one or more injection functions may be graphically plotted within the same graph space to define an injection protocol.

This invention relates to a colonic residue tagging system, formulation, it and method for use in preparing an individual for a predetermined activity which requires tagging at least some colonic residue in a digestive tract such that a medically and/or diagnostically useful procedure can be performed on the difestive tract. Such predetermined activity includes, but is not limited to, colon screening. In one alternative embodiment, a dietary regimen comprising low residue food is coordinated with the colonic residue tagging regimen, prior to a predetermined activity, thereby resulting in tagged stool such that a medically or diagnostically useful procedure can be performed on the digestive tract. The present invention also provides an individual sufficient amounts of fluids and nutrition while minimizing the amount of stool formation prior to the predetermined activity.

The present invention relates to a device (50), method, system and kit for receiving effluent from an individual. In an alternative embodiment, the present invention is directed to a device (50), method, system and kit for allowing effluent from an individual during a medical or diagnostic procedure including but not limited to, imaging or viewing one or more sections of an individual's gastrointestinal tract. In another embodiment, the effluent is collected in a hollow area (34) in order to prevent the effluent from contaminating a component, device or apparatus used in conection with the medical or diagnostic procedure.

A medical extravasation device has an electrode patch that can attach to the skin for sensing electrical information. Tissue impedance is calculated from the electrode patch signals. The patch has elongate pick-up electrodes inboard of elongate energizing electrodes. The measuring zone determined by the elongate space between the pick-up electrodes enhances sensitivity and specificity. The presence of an extravasation is determined by interpreting the tissue impedance measurement. The method for determining the extravasation includes a first step of determining a pre-injection baseline measurement of the tissue impedance. Then, the tissue impedance is monitored during the procedure itself. A predetermined amount of change in tissue impedance is determined to indicate an extravasation.
