The present invention relates to calcined kaolins having optimal whiteness and brightness properties. The calcined kaolins can comprise metakaolin, fully calcined kaolin, or flash calcined kaolin. The kaolin can be calcined from hydrous kaolin that has been subjected to enhanced magnetic separation. The resulting calcined kaolin can have a whiteness defined by a Hunter lab coordinate L value of at least about (96). The calcined kaolin can also have a brightness of at least about (90), as measured by a Technibrite TB-1C instrument. The present invention also relates to methods of preparing calcined kaolins. The present invention also relates to paints, polymers, coatings, ceramics, paper, and cementitious products comprising these calcined kaolins.

The present invention relates to calcined kaolin products, their production, and use. More specifically, the invention relates to calcined kaolin-containing products having a median diameter particle size of from about 0.5 µm to about 10 µm, and a multimodal particle size distribution defined herein. The calcined kaolin products of the invention possess a combination of physical properties and applied properties not previously seen together in calcined kaolin pigments. The products according to the invention find use as flattening (or matting) agents, and as fillers or extenders in paint and coating compositions. More generally, the inventive products may be used wherever calcined kaolins are used.

The present invention provides several methods for improving the high and low shear rheology of a substantially grit-free and substantially dispersed particulate slurry using a rotor-stator type mill. The methods are applicable to slurries including a natural mineral, suspensions including a natural mineral, and suspensions including synthetic minerals. The methods of the present invention selectively include performance of one or more of the processes of beneficiation, re-milling, dewatering and re-dispersion, and drying, performed in any one of several sequences as disclosed or suggested herein. The present invention further provides a number slurry products having an improved high and/or low shear rheology that are produced by the performance of different combinations of these methods.
