Further disclosed is a method wherein the frustules comprise titanium dioxide comprising [a.] providing diatoms comprising organic matter and the frustules, [b.] providing a growing medium for the frustules, [c.] adding titanium complex, such as Ti-triethanolamine complex, to the growing medium of diatoms, and [d.] removing organic matter of the diatoms, by treating the diatoms with an acid and calcining, thereby uncovering frustule foams comprising titanium dioxide. The frustule foams comprising titanium dioxide can be used as photocatalysts in air purification systems.
