A sloped heat exchange element (29) is sealingly mounted above the bottom of the tank (3) of a railway tank car adjacent each end of the tank. Each heating element is thermally isolated from the tank cradles (18, 19) and bolsters (16, 17), which detrimentally act as heat sinks in conventional heated tank cars. The sloped heat exchangers can be manufactured into the car or retrofit into tank cars not previously having heat coils or they can be retrofit into tank cars having either internal or external heating coils.

A valve attachment flange comprising the lading outlet valve (15) for a railway tank car (2) is placed in an insulative space between a heat element (11, 12) heated fluid medium carrying heat ducts (42, 45) and the bottom (22) of the car (2). The outlet valve (15) is surrounded by a heat chamber (41) in fluid flow communication with the heat ducts (42, 45) of the heat elements (11, 12) whereby the heat chamber (41) surrounding the outlet valve (15) is efficiently heated simultaneously with the heating of the lading by the heat element (11, 12) to promote flow of lading from the tank (3). This arrangement promotes fast efficient heating of the lading on top of and adjacent the outlet valve (15) and enables a valve body (34) attached to the recessed attached flange (27) to extend downwardly from the bottom (22) of the car (2) a lesser amount than conventionally mounted valves.

A heated railroad tank car (10) having a heat exchanger apparatus within the tank car spaced above the bottom of the tank car to form a dead space or compartment. A pair of heat exchanger units (28, 30) which extend inwardly and downwardly from the ends of the car in an end-to-end relationship. Each of the heat exchanger units has top (32) and bottom (34) plates spaced apart and being sealed at their periphery (40) with a plurality of spaced apart plates (36) secured thereto and extending therebetween to create a baffle system between the top and bottom plates of longitudinal passages. Each of the heat exchanger units has an inlet (42) formed at its inner end to enable steam or hot water to be introduced into the heat exchanger unit. The heated water or steam is passed through the heat exchanger unit by the baffles and is subsequently discharged from the heat exchanger unit by an outlet (44) in communication therewith. The upwardly steam conducting flow channels are preferably smaller in area cross-section than the downwardly conducting channels to reduce back pressure. Drainage tubes (46, 48) in the lowermost portion of the apparatus communicate between the flow channels and drain outlet to provide total drainage of condensate by purging and by gravity flow.
