A composite system for the reinforcement of physical structures includes a plurality of unidirectional fibers arranged with respective longitudinal axes generally parallel to each other over a substantial portion of a length of each unidirectional fiber. The plurality of unidirectional fibers are non-mechanically connected. A resinous material adheres the plurality of unidirectional fibers to each other such that each one of the plurality of unidirectional fiber is adhered to at least one adjacent one of the plurality of unidirectional fibers along a substantial portion of the length of the adjacent one of the plurality unidirectional fibers.

Methods are provided for strengthening (e.g., repairing, structurally reinforcing, etc.) a fluid-system component by installing, as a circumferential wrap or a patch, a radiation-curable composite laminate. Kits including composite repair materials and equipment for implementing the methods are also provided. Examples of fluid-system components that may be strengthened include pipework, pipelines, transmission pipelines, distribution pipelines, gathering lines, oil risers, gas risers, process piping, girth welds on pipelines or vessels, tanks, vessels, elbows, tees, flanges, and high-pressure injection lines. An approach where, prior to curing, the precursor to the composite laminate comprises a glass fabric, a carbon fabric, or any combination(s) thereof, pre-impregnated with an uncured epoxy resin, an uncured epoxy acrylate resin, or a mixture thereof, is used; curing is performed via electron beam irradiation; and the installation and curing procedures can be automated to the maximum extent possible, in exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure.

This fabric has the further property that, upon exposure to aqueous moisture in a gaseous medium or water in the atmosphere or under water, it hardens spontaneously, holding the impregnated fabric material (12) in a moisture-impervious envelope (10) together with a charge of substantially dry gas (16) until used. The envelope is then opened and the impregnated fabric material (12) is applied directly to the industrial article in the presence of moisture.
