A hollow plug portion (22) comprising a secondary side wall (30) extending around an end cap (31) is releasably engageable in the socket portion (20) to form the vaporising chamber (24). A heat transfer member (46) extends from the primary partition wall (28) into the vaporising chamber (24) for heating the herbal matter in the vaporising chamber (24). The aerosol is drawn from the vaporising chamber (24) through an aerosol accommodating tube (37).

A catalytic combustion element (16) is located in a combustion chamber (15) for raising the temperature of the main housing (5) to an appropriate temperature for melting the glue stick. Fuel gas is supplied to the catalytic combustion element (16) through a fuel gas valve (20) having a spindle (40) extending therefrom. A piezo electric ignition unit (27) generates an EMF for generating a spark across a pair of electrodes (25) in the combustion chamber (15) for igniting the fuel gas to initially burn with flame combustion to raise the temperature of the catalytic element (16) to its ignition temperature. An operating member (51) and an integral camming member (52) are slideable in the direction of the arrow D from an inoperative state to an operative state for sequentially operating the fuel gas valve (20) from a closed to an open state, and then the piezo electric ignition unit (27) for igniting the fuel gas in the combustion chamber (15). An idle camming surface (55) of the camming member (52) engages a cam follower (53) of the spindle (40) of the fuel gas valve (20) with the fuel gas valve (20) in the closed state, and an operating camming surface (59) engages the cam follower (53) with the fuel gas valve (20) in the open state.

An upstream portion (5) of the housing (3) which forms a handle (6) houses a reservoir (30) from which fuel gas is supplied to the combustion chamber (25). Batteries (20) in the handle (6) power a motor (19) for driving the fan (18). The heat exchanger (15) completely shields the gas catalytic combustion element (29) from the affects of the air being urged through the hollow interior region (10) by the fan (18) for preventing chilling and inadvertent extinguishing of the gas catalytic combustion element (29) during use.

The sachet (1) is shaped and sized to releasably arid snugly engage a vaporising chamber (15) of the vaporising device (5) with a heat transfer member (25) therein extending into the hollow interior region (46) of the sachet (1). The upstream end cap (49) is of a paper based permeable material which is permeable to air and the downstream end cap (53) is of a similar permeable paper based material which is permeable to an aerosol formed by vaporised constituents from the tobacco (2) entrained in air drawn through the hollow interior region (46) of the sachet (1) when the sachet (1) is in the vaporising chamber (15). The vaporising chamber (15) is formed by a socket portion (16) and a releasable plug portion (18), within which a hollow interior region (22) is formed for accommodating the sachet (1).
