The anomaly causes a reflected electromagnetic wave to propagate in a second direction along the elongate conductive member. The second direction is opposite the first direction. The electric field of the reflected electromagnetic wave is sensed. The magnetic field of the reflected electromagnetic wave is sensed. A direction of propagation of the reflected electromagnetic wave is determined based on the electric field of the reflected electromagnetic wave and the magnetic field of the reflected electromagnetic wave.

Systems and methods for detecting anomalies, such as corrosion, on internal surfaces of hollow elongate bodies, such as pipelines. The pipeline is treated as a circular waveguide, and a fast rise time pulse or a spectrum of electromagnetic waves is launched down the waveguide to perform time domain, or equivalent of time domain (e.g., frequency domain), reflectometry. Anomalies in the internal structure of the pipeline cause reflections which can be measured and related to the physical parameters of the pipeline structure and identified to a particular location.

A test source signal is applied to a first test location on the elongate conductive member remote from the corrosion to cause the test source signal to travel along the pipe through the anomaly. At least one test return signal caused by the test source signal traveling through the anomaly is detected. The at least one test return signal for characteristics associated with the anomaly. Optionally, a perturbation may be applied to the elongate conductive member to place the conductive member in a perturbed state in which the electromagnetic characteristics of the conductive member at the anomaly are altered. The test source signal is applied to the first test location when the conductive member is in the perturbed stated.

An electromagnetic pulse (26) is transmitted into a pipeline (A) to travel as a propagating electromagnetic wave along the pipeline (A) to a receiving station (35). Both the distance traveled from the transmitting (44) and receiving location (35), and also the time interval for such travel are measured. Velocity of the wave is dectected as a means of ascertaining whether corrosion is present. Various embodiments, using both multi-channel (80) and single cables, are used to transmit the detected waves, and the waves are received at a plurality of spaced locations (36) along the length of the pipeline (A). For an insulated pipeline, the signals can be received by a directional antenna, and the pulses can be transmitted into the pipeline by an antenna directly on the pipeline or a magnet electrical contact member.

Far side and near side electric pulses are transmitted into a magnetically permeable pipe (10) at spaced locations to travel toward one another. These are synchronized to intersect at various locations on the pipe (10). The resulting waveforms are analyzed by combining adjacent waveforms resulting from pulses intersection at spaced locations. Two combined waveforms are analyzed by subtracting one from the other to produce a difference waveform and the difference waveforms are compared to detect corrosion.
