There is provided an automatic billing system controller operated by a telephone company which incorporates means (20) of calculating an utilization charge in accordance with the number of seconds during which a user who has called a special number is connected to that number, and then of adding the utilization charge to the user's call charge. At the user's end the invoice charge data is input and the number of seconds of connection to a special line number are set in accordance with the invoice charge and a network control means (30) then provides a connection with the special line number for the number of seconds which has been set. The telephone exchange's utilization charge computation means then adds the utilization charge to the call charge for collection from the user. In this way the telephone company is able to collect an invoice charge on behalf of the supplier of the corresponding service.

The invention is a device for the provision of various types of information through the medium of a public telephone line. By using a comparatively large capacity semiconductor memory (3) with a fast access time as the memory medium, the invention is able to handle simultaneous calls on more than one telephone line under equivalent conditions. The invention comprises a ROM (3) in which digital data is stored, and a timing signal output means (8), which divides the basic clock time and outputs the resultant timing signals at the required frequency. The invention is also fitted with a plurality of parallel control means (2a-2c), each of which carries out an address count in accordance with the timing signals while at the same time reading out the data corresponding to each successive address from the ROM (3). The invention is also able to read data out in parallel from more than one address in the ROM (3) by allocating and transmitting the timing signals output by said timing output means (8) at equal intervals to each of the control means (2a-2c), said data being subsequently output as appropriate to each of the public telephone lines to which the device according to the invention is connected.

The invention relates to an idle time communication device in which communication windows are created during the transmission of broadcast data from a center unit (10; 17, 17', 17'') to a user's home device (38), said windows being designed to augment the data transmission function by enabling one-to-one bidirectional communication between said center (10) and said user's home (30). The present invention assumes the prior existence of a communication device for the transmission of broadcast data from said independent center (10) through the telephone network (40) to said user's home (30) and achieves its object of one-to-one bidirectional communication between said center (10) and said user's home (30) through the use of packet communication which is carried out during the idle time on said telephone network (40), which connects the switching system (21) of the local telephone exchange (20) with the telephone in said user's home (30). This makes one-to-one bidirectional communication possible and, in so doing, also enables both the transmission of download data from a control unit (11) to a specified terminal (32) and also the transmission of upload data from a specified terminal (32) to a control unit (11) without confusion between terminals in either case. This enables, for example, (a) a control device (11) to transmit download data to a specified terminal (32) and for the due arrival of said download data to be confirmed at the center (10) by the return upload of data from said terminal (32), (b) the center (10) to receive music requests and instructions in the form of upload data from a terminal (32), and (c) the creation of a protocol that will enable error-free communication to be carried out between control device (11) and terminal (32).
