摘要: A blast furnace with a blowpipe (12) opening through the furnace wall (11), has apparatus for analysis (20) in a raceway (18) adjacent the blowpipe opening in a bed of the blast furnace. The apparatus includes means (24) arranged in relation to the blast furnace to transmit an optical signal into the raceway, and means (30) for monitoring a received signal derived from reflection or scattering of the transmitted optical signal in the raceway. Means (32) is provided to analyse the received signal in relation to the transmitted signal and to thereby obtain a measure of a parameter of the raceway. The method of analysis comprises transmitting an optical signal into the raceway, monitoring a received signal derived from reflection or scattering of the transmitted optical signal in the raceway, and analyzing the received signal in relation to the transmitted signal to obtain a measure of a parameter of the raceway.

摘要: Apparatus for cladding and thus reclaiming a worn rolling mill roll by fusing a surface layer thereon, comprises an electro-slag mould (7); a slewable derrick structure (Fig. 2) able to feed a split tubular, consumable electrode (51) into the mould; a turn-table (8) supporting the mould; a tiltable induction furnace (55) to charge the mould with molten flux; product transport means (Fig. 1) to lift a worn mill roll through the mould and withdraw it downwardly from the mould as cladding proceeds and comprising rigid hangers (12) extending downwardly from the turn-table, an elevator carriage (14) with a product holder and adapter including a mould plug (29), and power driven jack screws (19) to raise and lower the carriage (14); and drive means (9, 11) to cause rotary oscillation of the turn-table and the components carried by it, including the roll, relative to the electrode. A method of cladding a worn roll by the electro-slag process is also disclosed wherein the mould and roll are rotationally oscillated about the axis of the roll relative to the electrode, as cladding proceeds.

摘要: A method and apparatus for calibrating sensor means such as cameras and for measuring the dimension of an article using the calibrated sensor means in which a calibration frame (20) having reference points (22-40) is located in the field of view of the sensor means. Calibration constants are derived from the reference points as perceived by the sensor means having regard to known displacements. The calibration constants are used in equations which give the dimensions of the article in a subsequent measurement step taking into account perspective distortions due to the positional relationship between the sensor means and the calibration frame. In the case of elongate articles information from the sensor means is used to determine if the article is at an angle to a predetermined axis, this information being utilized in determining the dimensions of the article.

摘要: The specification describes an alkanol decomposition catalyst comprising copper and nickel supported on a suitable carrier. Suitable carriers include silica, magnesia and silica/magnesia. The catalyst may be promoted with an element selected from Groups I to VIII of the Periodic Table. The specification also discloses a process for decomposing an alkanol. The process comprises heating an alkanol to an elevated temperature and contacting the heated alkanol with the alkanol decomposition catalyst. A method of improving the energy efficiency of methanol when used as a fuel in an internal combustion engine is also disclosed. The method involves contacting heated methanol with the alkanol decomposition catalyst and combusting the decomposition products in the internal combustion engine.

摘要: A steel composition comprising in wt% C: 0.35 to 1.2, Mn: 0.3 to 3.0, Si: 0.3 to 2.0, Cr: 5.0 to 11.5, Mo: 0.3 to 5.0, Nb: 0.4 to 5.0, V: 0.3 to 3.0, balance iron and incidental impurities. Composite roll formed by welding the steel composition onto a metal core to form a hardface. Optionally heat treating the composite roll (a) stress relieving stage (i) heating the composite roll at a rate of 40 DEG C to 100 DEG C/hour from the welding temperature to within a range of temperatures at which the microstructure of the hardface can stress relieve; (ii) holding the composite roll within the range of temperatures for a sufficient time to allow the microstructure to partially stress relieve; and (iii) air cooling the composite roll to room temperature to partially transform the austenite phase to the martensite phase; (b) first tempering stage (i) heating the composite roll at a rate of 40 DEG C to 100 DEG C/hour to within a range of temperatures to allow the microstructure to temper; (ii) holding the composite roll within the range of temperatures for a sufficient time to allow partial tempering; and (iii) air cooling the composite roll to room temperature; (c) second tempering stage, repeating the first tempering stage.
