A power module on an entity having an electrical power bus, the power module comprising: a rechargeable electrical power source (34, 44); and a switch (38, 48) coupled between the power source (34, 44) and the bus. The switch (38, 48) is switchable between a first state, a second state, and a third state. The first state of the switch (38, 48) is such that the power source (34, 44) is connected to the bus such that the power source (34, 44) provides electrical power to the bus. The second state of the switch (38, 48) is such that the power source (34, 44) is connected to the electrical power bus such that the power source (34, 44) receives and is charged by electrical power from the bus. The third state of the switch (38, 48) is such that the power source (34, 44) is disconnected from the bus.

An error correction protocol utilising as a security measure the bit error rate of a high bandwidth random data stream (111) broadcast by an optical transmission system (106). A first user (104a) and a second user (104b) receive the random data stream (111) and extract independently a keychain at an extraction rate chosen to memory bound an enemy. The protocol allocates a portion of the extracted data for the purpose of masking the result of an error correction function communicated between the users. The first user applies an error correction function to a key part of its keychain and codes the result using another part of its keychain. The coded result is sent to the second user, who decodes it and uses the decoded result to recover the corresponding key part of its keychain. The respective key parts can be used as a shared secret.

A microparticle which is invisible to the naked eye and is marked with a machine readable code. A tagging compound comprising a powder, fluid or gas when mixed with one or more set or sets of microparticles of which each has a predetermined shape representative of a unique code selected from a multiplicity of such codes, such that the presence of the microparticles is undetectable to the naked eye.

A method of producing a genetically transformed fluid-producing plant comprises:- i) inserting into the plant tissue a gene or gene fragment controlling the expression of a target product, and ii) regenerating a plant from said tissue, the genetically transformed plant being capable of expressing the target product in the fluid that it produces. There are also provided clones of genetically transformed fluid-producing plants which contain in their cells a chromosomal insert such that the target product is expressed in the fluids that the plants produce. There is further described a method of producing a protein or other target product which comprises:- i) harvesting the fluid from a genetically transformed fluid-producing tree or plant, or a clone thereof, and ii) recovering the target protein or other product from said fluid. Most preferably, the plants are rubber ( Hevea ) plants and the genes are foreign genes that code for pharmaceutically valuable protein products which can be harvested in the latex produced by the plants.

A method of controlling a power system comprising: an electrical power bus; one or more loads (20); a fuel cell (10); a rechargeable electrical power source (34); and a switch (38). The method comprises: acquiring a load demand of loads (I L ); acquiring an output level for the fuel cell (I F ); acquiring a state of charge for the power source (S B ); and using the acquired data, controlling the switch (38) to be switched into a first, a second, or a third state. The first state is such that the power source (34) is connected to the bus such that the power source (34) provides power to the bus. The second state is such that the power source (34) is connected to the bus such that the power source (34) is charged by the bus. The third state is such that the power source (34) is disconnected from the bus.

A method of identifying one or more micro-organisms in a fluid comprising the steps of: (i) taking a sample of the fluid containing a representative sample of any micro-organism(s) present; (ii) optionally culturing the sample if necessary to increase the number of micro-organisms for a pre-determined range; (iii) measuring the zeta potentials of any micro-organisms present; (iv) optionally normalising the measurements taken in step (iii) such that they relate to standard conditions; (v) comparing said measured zeta potentials with a table of the zeta potentials of known micro-organisms to determine which, if any, of the known micro-organisms are present in the fluid.
