An alignment disk including data tracks written in a spiral configuration, through the use of microstepping techniques, to accurately test a variety of transducer head parameters including head alignment, resolution and offset. The tracks include standard spiral tracks, S-shaped clamping spiral tracks and bordered spiral tracks, comprising a sequence of discrete address blocks each containing unique identifying information. The spacing of each address block is precisely known and because each is separately identifiable transducer head location can be precisely ascertained. The microstepping technique may also be employed to create a copy protected disk for disk drives having half-track read and write capabilities.

An alignment testing device comprising a magnetic media with data tracks in nonstandard locations with bidirectionally progressive degrees of misalignment for testing the alignment of the transducer head in a magnetic storage device such as a floppy disk drive. The alignment testing device allows the user to determine the boundaries of track alignments that the transducer head can read, and thereby determine any discrepency between the heads actual alignment and correct alignment.

An improved reinforcement member for a central aperture in a flexible recording disk and a method for forming the same. The improved reinforcement comprises an integral, annular-shaped ring formed on one or both sides of the flexible recording disk about the central aperture thereof. This improved reinforcement is formed by transfer printing a liquid image of the reinforcement member onto a side surface of the flexible recording disk and then subsequently solidifying that liquid image. The liquid image to be transfer printed onto the flexible recording disk is first established by filling a metering reservoir shaped to be an image of the reinforcement member with a solidifying liquid. A terminal end of complaint rubber tampon is then first contacted to the reservoir thereby picking up the liquid image which is then contacted to the surface of the flexible disk to be deposited there. In the preferred embodiment of this invention, the solidifying liquid material comprises a cross-linkable, non-solvent based polyolefin monomer material in combination with a cross-linking agent which, when exposed to ultraviolet light, creates free radicals whereby the monomer material is caused to cross-link and hence polymerize into a solid.

The method for fabrication of the shutter includes stamping a slot in the sheet stock at a location which will form an edge of the shutter where plastic deformation occurs. A surface-hardening coating is formed on all exposed areas of the shutter, including the edge of the stamped slot. The shutter is trimmed and punched to its final size, and the shutter is bent to form a spine and a pair of legs, with the edges of the slots forming a wear-resistant edge on each leg near the spine.
