Each rib is tapered such that the end of each rib closest to the base surface extends from the perimeter wall further than the end of the rib furthest from the base surface. A terminal cap is placed within the perimeter wall and forced toward the base surface until the tapered ribs engage and are deformed by the terminal cap to provide an interference fit between the ribs and the terminal cap. A method of assembling a battery and an electrical component with such a protection device is also disclosed.

A "fuel gauge" for a pulse dischargeable alkali metal/solid cathode cell is described. The rate of voltage recovery is used to determine the state of charge of the cell. Voltage recovery includes recovery from one load to a second, lighter load, or a loaded condition to OCV. The present invention is particularly useful as an end-of-life indicator for a Li/CF x cell powering an implantable medical device.

A new sandwich cathode design having a first cathode active material of a relatively high energy density but of a relatively low rate capability sandwiched between two current collectors and with a second cathode active material having a relatively low energy density but of a relatively high rate capability in contact with the opposite sides of the two current collectors, is described. The present cathode design is useful for powering an implantable medical device requiring a high rate discharge application.
